It happened here in July and ended up killing someone swimming in the ocean near Venice Beach (California).  The article's point is, lightning can hit miles away from the thunderhead that is producing it.  It may happen to be blue sky near where you are, but the lightning can travel.

What? you mean lightning doesn't go straight down?

But my teacher showed us a cartoon and the picture shows it going almost straight down.

I believe my teacher, she would never lie to me. She also tells me global warming will kill everyone too if we don't raise taxes for the government to invent an anti global warming machine.

I've never heard the term "bolt out of the blue" before.

I experienced one in Florida back in the '60s, getting out of my car in a parking lot when a bolt hit a metal lamp post about 100' away. It was from a typical mid-afternoon thunderboomer that was approaching about 3-5 miles away, but the sky above me was clear.

I think I remember the record for lateral distance of a lethal lightning strike was 7 miles from the storm cloud.
