Reminds me of Colorado.  I miss it. No work where I was. Winters weren't bad. Lots of sunny days.

I loved it there, loved the mountains. But I used to say, "You can't eat the mountains".

Map shows 7,000 to 9,000 degree day winters, except in the mountains, where they have >9,000 degree day winters.

I was there earlier this year and it was a nice windy 75 degree day.. which I thought was ok since it was a warm spring/summer day back in seattle when I left... I asked the front desk girl about the weather and she said it was unusal and just the prior week it had been snow and bitter cold.. then she described how she had moved there the prior summer and then the winter hit like a brick and stayed for 6 months and she was really glad to feel her lips again.  yikes.

Yeah, there is some wonderful landscape up there.
But the fuckin' winters up there are brutal!

I'll stick with my AZ northern mountains and mild winters....

It actually snowed while we were there, mid-September, at higher elevations. GF shut down the camping when it got into the 20's at night .

I don't mind the cold. I've looked into several states over the years and the summers up there should more than make up for the winters.

Don't worry.  Transplants from California will get a law passed to regulate that.

Is that Glacier National park? Ive spent lots of time around that area and would love to live there but not much work wise. Brutal winters are a small price to pay to live in that place and it helps keep the clowns from California away i'm sure.

They have some nice homeless camps around Missoula and the Poverello Center will feed him. Plenty of bleeding hearts to panhandle from.

Great photos.  I stopped in Montana for a few nights on a motorcycle camping trip.  It was my favorite state on the trip by far.  The mountains outside of Missoula were great.

I want to move there, too, OP.  I would go tomorrow if I could find work.  Unfortunately, in looking at homes for sale, everything I found that I liked was either too pricey, or a hell of a fucking long drive from any potential employment.

I lived in Alaska for a few years, so I think the winters would be fine, but the job market seems to make it a pipe dream for me for the time being.

A couple are from Glacier. That place has to be seen to be believed, almost to beautiful to comprehend. I could've stood there for hours just staring but no time, I had fish to catch.

The winters are what keep that place from being overrun, like California has been. Only a million people in the entire state.

I just don't know where this comes from.  I personally think the winters in Montana are pretty mild.  If you want a cold winter, go to Fairbanks or Northern Alaska.  Its a little chilly up there.  As for Montana though, mild winters in my opinion.

Of course you live in AZ, so you might be a little biased.

OP:  Whatever you do, do not come to Montana without a job.  Unemployment is a reality in western Montana, so please have employment lined up, that is unless you're independently wealthy.

This.  I'm a skilled tradesman with a college degree and plenty of professional certifications and experience.  I make $16 an hour.  I've been trying to find a better job for over a year.  I could probably make $75-$100 an hour in California or out in the oilfield.

My only really complaint about MT is they have some retarded CCW restrictions(no carrying in most restraunts, banks) though it would probably be a huge upgrade for a CA person.

OC or put it in a bag is the solution. The bar law is poorly written so most people interpret it as no carrying in the bar room.

What part of montana you in?  Last year we had -40 degrees for weeks with winds upward of 60 mph.  It finally quit snowing though, which allowed me enough time to get the tractor started and start plowing the snow drifts.

Nice pics!

Lots of threads about MT, ID, WY etc. lately. Most of the people I've run into made their money or most of it in some city in another state. They retire a few years early and move permanently to either what was their summer cabin/house or find a new place.
When they get too old and need to be closer to medical care etc. they move back into or near a larger population center. ymmv
