So in the other Florida thread the Florida people make comments disparaging tourists.
I was under the impression that the entire states economy was based on tourism, is there some other export that I'm missing? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I haven't been able to get a firm answer as to whether or not tourism is the #1 industry in Florida, but there are a few that should be acknowledged as being at the top of the list:
1) tourism 2) shipping imports/exports (the larger cities nearer to the coasts all have ports) 3) agriculture (oranges in particular). Half of the state doesn't freeze during the winter, so hardy agriculture can occur during the winter months in the warmer parts. |

Tourists *do* fucking suck though.
Also citrus. And I think sand, there's a huge quarry by my old town. EDIT TO ADD: Forgot tomatoes and sugercane. Also rockets. |

CItrus, sugarcane strawberries, tomatoes.
Phosphate mining is big, produces about 3/4 of phosphate needed by farmers.

in the old days...Florida had more cattle than Texas.
oranges tomaters sugar phosphate tropical plants and flowers eggs and poultry |

The problem with Florida is that it generates more "what the fuck" than it can consume locally.
sorry Mr. Churchill. |

Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I REALLY wish we didn't have a tourist based economy - I have no wanting to bend over backwards for obnoxious or clueless foreigners, northerners, and windowlickers from fly over states. We have giant gobs of people in this state that work part time min-wage jobs (usually service or tourism related) and get welfare. The prime example of this is Orlando.

Interesting I figured oranges were more of a marketing thing than anything, kinda like Idaho potatoes.

Not oranges.
Was in Palm Harbor last week and a guy told me the orange crop is shit this year due to some sort of bug or something. Said they are importing oranges to keep Tropicana operating. |
