I've seen .gov plates on a wide variety of odd vehicles.... all of them were over seas but still... lol

I think my favorite was the 454 SS El Camino on Osan AFB that the base commander drove...

Even if they are assembled in the US, I find it odd that a gov't entity would allow a plate on a "non-US" brand.  Ford or GM sure but Toyota?

Tacomas are built in Mexico, whereas the HD series GM trucks are made in Flint, and the Tahoes made in Arlington (by Americans).

Because optics.  Also, it was strange to learn that a truck was wearing a tag meant for a midsize sedan.

So the base commander scarfed one of the U-2 chase vehicles?  Nice...

I worked for a guy who bought one of those El Caminos when he was stationed at Beale working on the SR-71.  He repainted it a nasty purple and silver paint scheme, keeping the steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps.

There were still bolt holes in the bed for seatbelts the guys who would have been riding there with the pogo wheels used to keep themselves in place during acceleration.  And that damn thing would accelerate with an LS-6 454 under the hood.

Before I retired in 1995 I put in a requirements change for our section to get an SUV in place of a pickup to do the work we were required to do.  I visited my old workplace two years after I retired, in 1997.  My replacement showed me their new vehicle and thanked me for getting him their 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Dude you have some double retired GS-5 that manages fleet vehicles do you think he gives a fuck about what vehicles have what plates? Our fleet plates are constantly fucked and they give 2 shits. Also .gov organizations have been known to swap plates around on their own vehicles when they expire because the bozo that has the additional duty of managing their fleet vehicles also give 0 fucks. It's the federal government we are talking about here not exactly the pinnacle of competence and organization.

It's this thing called lowest bidder and there isn't any stipulation in any notice to bid for vehicels that I have seen that says they must be US or US made.

I have no idea what the "rules" are for government auto purchasing.  Like I said, though, I was surprised.  We just spent billions of dollars on the US auto industry and politicians like to praise American car companies up and down.  It made sens to me that cars with govt tags would be US made.

Not a new thing.  Right after Lee Iacocca got Chrysler's first bailout we got nothing but craptastic Dodge and Plymouth vehicles.  Loved going from a 1/2 ton Ford or Chevy pickup to a Dodge Rampage 1/4 ton truck.

If the U.S. tax payer is ultimately paying the bill, wouldn't it make sense to buy from a company that employs U.S. tax's payers to build the vehicle. It helps keep the wealth of the U.S. in the U.S.

And I know many foreign auto manufacturers employ Americans to build vehicles. I would personally prefer to see a government plate on a Honda made in Indiana than on a F150 made in Canada.

Back in the '70s, there was a Blue(w/yellow trim, Hood Scoop) '69 Mustang Fastback running around Panama City, Fl.

Official number on the fenders, T.P. 32 over the wheel wells...

Got to give the guy credit for specifying a 2-door Ford for his official vehicle.

Yep, and if you were an affected owner you probably made out like a bandit when they bought it back.  Quickly.  With little to no bullshit.

That's what I hear from Toyota owners affected by that recall.  What do we hear from American car owners affected by recalls?
