I'm a Free Mason... also referred to as Speculative Masons... of the fraternal order of Free Masonry.

Really... if you knew anything of the order you would know that it pays honor to the contributions you and your craft brethren have made to society. Perhaps before you denounce something you should take the time to educate yourself.

Actually the new Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York has decreed that he believes the old practice of requiring a prospective member to ask first to be archaic.
Fifty years ago everybody was familiar with the various fraternal orders... Masons, Knights of Pithias, Knights of Columbus, Moose, Elks, Hibernians, Kiwanis, Rotary... etc. Today, far fewer people do. Numbers have declined because we have been our own worst enemy in terms of marketing. By nature we don't take credit for much of our good work... i.e. Shriner's Hospitals (yes, ALL Shriners must first become Masons). Now we do a soft sell, and if someone doesn't ask the magic question, "How do I become a Mason" (which was what we had to hear before we discussed joining with them) we can now say..., "Hey, have you ever thought about becoming a Mason?" Anyway, other states have given these Grand Master's classes with much success. New York has decided to give it a try. What exactly do masons do? Is it just a club where guys sit around and bullshit, or is there really secret stuff that you can't tell people, or what?
I've looked at stuff on the net, but I don't know what is bullshit and what isn't. Most of the stuff out there is from the tinfoil hat people talking about masons taking over the world and controlling the money and the jews and bla, bla, bla. So what's up, what is the purpose of joining? I'm being serious here.... |

The Masons are a fraternal order dedicated to moral self-improvement and the betterment of society.
As stated we are involved in a variety of charitable endeavors. We are semi-secret in the sense that we have passwords and such to identify each other. we do not control the world... So, does it cost money to be a mason? I read that they masons spent $1.4M a day in the US, where does that money come from? What about the references needed to join, one mason and three other people? What if you don't know any masons?

I joined Masons back in April at our first ever 1 Day Class. I also joined Scottish Rite the same day. I later joined The El Kadir Grotto.
I beleive that joining this fine organization is one of the best things I've done in my life. There is great comradery amongst your fellow Brothers. They will help you out whenever they can if a problem should arise in your life and they help out the community with monetary donations and with manpower every year. When you join a Lodge you then can attend a meeting in any Lodge around the world. I'm the 5th generation to become a Mason since my Great Great Grandparents came to America from Scotland back in the 1880's. If you are a man of upstanding character and have moral fiber I would strongly recomend you join. You'll be happy you did. |

In all seriousness, those fraternal organizations actually do a lot of good. Like HiramRanger said, they could seriously use an image makeover. |

I think the cost of being a Mason is negligible... My first year it was about $100 which included all initiation fees and the first year's dues. Subsequent years have been less than $75 per year which helps underwrite operating expenses. Now our dues are somewhat subsidized by endowments from deceased brothers, many lodges are. My lodge is the 5th oldest in NYS... Actually its a bit older, I believe the 3rd oldest in the State, but when the Grand Lodge of the State incorporated in the late 1700s our lodge was a little slow to recognize it... stubborness I guess.
Anyway a lot of the money we raise comes from activities such as fund drives, donations that are invested and the proceeds used to support philanthropic works, etc. BTW, my lodge has never turned away a man who could not afford his dues, there are plenty of brothers who will carry the load financially so that we can have more hands to help the community. |

That is the Grand Lodge Room in NYC, the same building also has 12 or 16 smaller lodge rooms that follow various styles of architecture. I believe NYC has a couple hundred lodges, many of which meet at the Grand Lodge building 6 or 7 nights a week... beehive of activity. Also, the building containing the Grand Lodge also holds our library where every Masonic work ever published can be found... both pro and anti-Mason. The library is open to the public and Masons may sign just about any work out and mail it back when done. Non-Masons must view the materials there, but are welcome. How bad can we be, what secrets could we be hiding, when we make the works of our detractors available in a central location and invite the public to read it. There is also office space in the same building that we rent out to support our activities. As for not knowing a Mason to sign your petition, just call a lodge and express interest. They will set up a lunch or dinner with you and a couple of the brothers... Be yourself and they are sure to like you and I'm betting they will offer to submit your petition. |
