For two years in the early 90's I was a leadout at Derby Lane in St. Petersburg FL. I walked dogs to and from the track every night and two performances on Saturday. My gf at the time was a trainer in a kennel responsible for 40 or more dogs. Ask away.

Why is greyhound racing dying out?  People too poor to bet?

Why do you think greyhound racing will be coming to an end?

At that time adoption was just getting started, prior to that the dogs with good bloodlines were sent back to breeders. The others would go to individual owners or be put down.
Today several kennels adopt every dog they own as a policy. Individual owners of racing dogs, the folks who contract with kennels to race their dog can still do as they please obviously.

Greyhound racing existed for degenerate gamblers to get their fix.  With the proliferation of legal gambling, who wants to dick around at a dog track?

Since it's on the decline,  should I go watch a race?

Never been.

I always noticed dogs that took a dump right before the race placed. Just a coincidence?

Attendance is down dramatically since lottery and casinos have started in FL. Florida has half of the remaining dog tracks in the US and those only operate races to comply with state regulations. If you want to have a card room you have to have live dog races. Without poker dog racing would already be over in FL.

At least one gtoup has asked the legislature to ban dog racing here recently.

In the 30's a couple from Florida trained monkeys to jockey on greyhounds. They traveled the country with this side show of a dozen or so monkeys and dogs.
I don't know what those jockeys were paid.

Ballpark. At dog racing's peak, what was the best dog in the world worth?

I could be way off, 75 to 100K would be my guess.

At one time Derby Lane held a million dollar to win race. The most recent stakes race paid over 30k and there are several stakes races every year.

Aside from the kennels that owned their own dogs the typical race dog owners were businessmen, doctors, lawyers, etc.

Yes, most of the dogs in a race would take a dump before the race anyway just not always on the track.

My favorite place in the world is a race track, pups or ponies.

In it's day Derby would attract thousands of spectators. The las t time I was there was a saturday night with fewer than 100 people watching.

The tracks down here , along with Jai-alai are trying to stay above board. They were offering up venues for concerts and then they got slots/gambling finally, which is saving their AXX#%@.... They still have to keep the dogs, horses or jai-alai but the casinos is where they will be making their money.

And on a side note, my neighbor has two retired greyhounds. One has a limp in his hind leg but their are nice dogs.
