OK, a while back I hand the old lantern going, and while cleaning up after dinner, I splashed some water, and got one or two drops on the hot globe.

It immediately cracked in a near-circle around the spot where one drop landed.  Now that's too bad, but understandable.

But thinking back, why didn't the rain that came down nearly sideways another time do the same thing to the lantern then?
