i have a 97 dodge truck and i have built a steel locking wall under the rear bench seat so i can securely store a rifle.  it's a hinged wall made of 1/4" steel plate that will fold forward and is locked with a dead bolt lock.  so it's real secure.  you have to cut thru the seat to get to the compartment.

so i want to put a rifle in there.  what kind do you think i should carry?

i am thinking a Shorty A2 with a carry handle scope mount and 3-9 x 40 leupold scope and two spare 30 round mags.

That will work, but why the big scope?

Ooh good choice. My uncle put a black synthetic stock on the one he gave my dad. Talk about a indestructable beater gun...

I need it to see.  smirk if you want but looking at a computer monitor for 15 years has ruined my vision.  irons work great for me out to about 15 yds but beyond that I need 3X of help.  and with this setup I can use the irons without removing the scope.  I guess I could go acog.

Try a SAR 1.  I can abuse a $279.00 gun easier than a $879.00 gun.  Reliable and thirty round clips are $6.  I know this is the AR board, but for the price you can't beat a cheap AK.

a spanish fr-8 mauser. Cheap, .308

Yep, an FR-8, or an SKS would be a good choice. Something inexpensive in case you lose it to fire, auto burglars, car thieves, tow truck drivers (thieves), or the police/fire department following a bad car accident.

What kind of stock will fit the FR-8?  I've been looking for one.

Oh I understood the 3x part. But why a 3-9x variable instead of just a plain 3-4-5x fixed power? Did you already have one lying around?

I went and drug it out. Its a el cheepo Ram Line black synthetic that I think is intended for restocking surplus K98's. The barrel does fit, but it has a different contour and it does not match the contour cast into the stock. There are some BIG gaps where the FR8 barrel steps down shorter than a k98's would. Ugly as sin but it certainly DOES do its job.

Barrett 50BMG is the only one I know of consistently able to stop a car.

Oh, you mean a "car rifle" as in one to carry in a car!!! I thought you meant "car rifle" like "deer rifle."

ok, i will explain myself.
i like 30 rounders because "I" find them easier to manipulate and i can't see entering a fight with a rifle that is half empty.  the rifle may not function properly so i may have to clear jam or multiple jams so i will be dumping and stripping live rounds on the ground as i try to fire the weapon.  i may decide the mag is crap and go to my backup magazine and the situation may  repeat.

sure i can bet my gun will go bang bang bang  bang bang and the fight will be over.
but i won't bet my life on it and i don't train like it.

We have a winner, in 30-30 of course.

I've ALWAYS said I've never felt "outgunned" if I had a lever-action filled with 6 or 7 shots of 30-30.

Something about those lever action firearms.

I'd go with an SKS for cheap, rugged and reliable. Who cares if it gets beat to hell under the seat? My next choice would be a Marlin 1894 in .357 mag.

I carry a 16" "FrakenAR15" at all times with 2 loaded 20s and a full 7 pocket bandolier.  It's a gun that is truly a fraken-gun, has a screw holding the front sight block on instead of drift pins, a few of the springs and pins are homemade, and sports a moly/teflon finish to protect it from rust.  I have about $300 or so in it. It's utterly reliable though.

Balming

The short barrel SKS is a great idea.  Another good idea would be to pick up a cheap Universal M-1 Carbine.  Should only cost around $200-250.  If it get stolen its not a major loss.  You could get 15 rd mags for 10 each.  Small enough to maneuver inside a vehicle.

thanks for all the advice.
i have been looking at everyting from a shorty AR to an ADL in 30-06.  i may just do with the AK.  what is the accuracy of AKs at say 100 yds?

i can live with 6"

6" at a hundred isn't too bad....Man sized target...
OTOH, if someone is a hundred yards away, they better be shooting at you for you to shoot back.  And if that's the case, a spray and pray AK is just the ticket, you won't have time to look through the scope of your REmington 700 and squeeze off a shot through his right nostril as you are running away trying to find a place with better cover.

I'd get a Saiga, 7.62x39, .223, or .308.
Cheap, utterly reliable, a very PC AK!
View Quote

That would be my first choice as well. The 7.62 x 39 Saiga sporter costs under $160 (at least $100 less than the cheapest Marlin or Winchester .30-.30 levergun), has ballistic characteristics comparable to the .30-.30, and can unleash 10 rounds just as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Also, the sporter configuration doesn't look like an "evil AK", so it's not likely to cause much concern with the LEOs. It comes with a scope rail at no extra cost, so adding optics is no problem. Finally, the stock butt plate can be removed to put an extra 10-round magazine and other accessories inside — makes a great "survival rifle".

sure it's for defense.  my life or someone else's.  are you willing to bet your life that a situation will NEVER come up where you have to take a shot at 100 yds?

now i get the advice that i need an AR-180B

I think I'll join in.

Worst case scenario: I'd rather have to face a jury having been apprehended with an FR-8 or a beat up 30/30 in my hands than just about any semi I can think of, except POSSIBLY a Universal (NOT USGI) carbine or maybe an unaltered mini-14.

I know, I know, It ain't right, but if you had to use either an AR, an AK, an SKS or some other 'military-type' weapon in a defensive situation, a liberal DA is a bit more apt to 'go after' you, even if it's a clear-cut case of self-defense.

Hey, you're talking to a handloader that loads his defensive weapons with civilian factory loads and tapes the sales slip to the box.

Reason: Some low life DA convinced a jury that some guy that defended himself with a 'Deadly handload' had made the load extra powerful so that it WOULD kill the assailant.

Gotta play CYA these days.

BTW, an old 'Pawn shop' 30/30 lever ought to give you enough firepower if you need it, and for the price, you can afford to either have ir get beat up some more or even have it get LSD.

Just something to think about.

I am willing to bet that, if you ever shoot someone 100 yards away, the DA will be pretty skeptical about your claims it was self-defense.

rifle may not function?

multiple jams?

mag is crap?

situation may repeat?

brother, it sure sounds like you could use a kalashnikov.

dead nutz reliabily. indestructable magazines. plenty accurate for service inside 300m.

sar's are currently under $300. mags are about $5-8 a pop.

a nice russian kobra autocolimatitor or pso telescopic sight can be had for under $150. and it mounts right on the standard equipment com-bloc optic rail that is factory mounted to every romanian and russian kalashnikov sold here.

Vote #3 for the Siaga.  I have one in 7.63x39 and three ten round mags in the truck right now.

It's already accounted for several wild dogs/coyotes and car-struck deer. I also put it in the boat when we go down to the coast.  Biggest thing killed with it was a crippled steer.

It fits all the requirements:

Cheap. (whole rig was under $250 with 500 rds ammo)

Powerful and reliable.

Light and handy.

I also question the "100yd" scenario.  Realistically speaking,  I cannot see using the thing in self defense further than say, 30 yds.

Carry all the time in a vehicle is hard on guns.  I use a stainless Mini GB.  Be sure and change ammo every 6 months.  The constant vibration of riding around in a truck tends to  wear away the coating that controls the burn rate of the powder.  I guess that 6 months is a little anal, but you got to shoot it anyway, don't ya?
