The Feds are coming out with colors and other changes for the larger bills. Does anyone know if the older bills will still be allowed to be used?
Will it be like the Euro where people have to exchange their old national currencies for new greenbacks, er, colored bills?

Yes, every US state will be forced to give up its own currency and the new federal currency will be accepted in every state.

Well the old money will probly still be good.  I really doubt they change that, but I do bet that anytime greenbacks that have new 'racially divisive term'(colored) replacements go to a bank they never come out.

Of course the old US money would be legal tender!

You wanna start a world-wide economic collapse?

Just start the rumor that the old US bills would be no good by such-and-such a date!

By the way, it was estimated that at one time, one-third of all US $100.00 bills were held by folks outside the United States!

I'll bet that's still true today!

Actually, I heard the same figure just the other day on the Discovery channel special about US currency.

Pretty interesting.

Yeah It is kinda surprising the number of places around the globe that will take greenbacks if you run out of whatever currency is issued by that nation.

Except for N. Korea....they just banned the use of the US dollar and everyone must have their greenbacks converted to Euros by a certain date.

Good for them, now give us our money back, beetches....

I think the new colors are based on what ethnic group you are.   Differant groups get differant colors, it's all based on the 2000 Census.

AHHhhh...

One day closer to a cashless society.

Of course the old bills will be destroyed. Not only that, it will be ILLEGAL to keep them in any large quantities other than souvenirs.

What's going to happen is that there will be "something wrong" with the NEW "colorful" bills that will make them obsolete about 2 days after the old money is all destroyed.

There will be lots of legislation signed really quick by both parties to take care of this "unfortunate" mistake.

Ten reasons why 90% of the American sheeple will accept a cashless society without a fight. They will believe that;

1. You cannot lose it.
2. The new technology to work with a credits-   only society will lead to more jobs.
3. You will not need to do your taxes as they will be done automatically for you.
4. No need to print money or mint coins looks like the government can "stop spending".
5. No money leaving the country illegaly.
6. No money coming in illegaly.
7. Gee, it's a really good way to track terrorists and people who buy bad things.
8. People like having cards with their name and photo on it. I dont know why, but they just do, It makes them feel like they "belong".
9. The security of a "dna" encoded card means you wont have money stolen.
10. Its good because the gubmint says so.

Eric,

Of course the old money would still be legal tender...IN the countries that adopt the US bill as their own currency after it is banned here.

I know you dont think we will ever be cashless, but then again, can you think of a better way to get all of the "bad" money out of a bad country? The entire world follows US currency. Changing it over to a new bill, or even going cashless is the best way to fight terrorism and banckrupt countries that support it.

Please elaborate on these "superbills" - never heard of these things - who did them, & what, were they counterfeits of our bills?
Link Posted: 12/8/2002 9:57:15 AM EDT
[#17]
Super Bills are counterfeits of US currency that are nearly indistinguishable from real money. Most fakes, even the good ones, are easily spotted by trained inspectors that work for the treasury but super bills have to be heavily scrutinized to find the flaws identifying them as counterfeit.

I'm not a money specialist, but I did watch a Discovery channel show on counterfeiting the night before last.

FYI...the best counterfeits ever made* were done by a guy called "King Kong" in Bangkok. He even did some of the final touches by hand after printing them on a homemade press. He made an estimated $4M in $100 bills before they caught him and his notes had circled the globe.

*This is not taking into account the foreign countries that are suspected of counterfeiting US notes, namely Iran.

Pardon the paranoia, but I do believe the old currency will become void. What a great way to hit the black market economy. The money might also have chips so that computers can track the movements of $100's.

Personally I am not worried, since I only have hard currency in the house right now, pennies, dimes & nickles.

No, the national reserve will slowly pull it out of circulation and destroy it, replacing the bills with new ones. Just like they are constantly doing.

Once money is legal tender, it's always legal tender. It's not something that can be voided.

You can laugh at me all you want.

Our government is chomping at the bit to get all money or "credits" traceable. Why do you think my tinfoil hat is on at the moment? (it is but thats another story...LOL)

Seriously, have you ANY idea how much tax our government is losing (not being able to steal) by having "private transactions" take place?

Private money transactions are NOT a Constitutional right. The only thing that currently allows them is the little disclaimer on the current notes that say it's legal tender for public or private transactions.

Approximately 10% of the worlds economy is in the form of paper money. The U.S. probably has 35-40% of that 10% (3%-4% global total). It would be nothing for them discard the paper system, Yet their gain (taxes, terrorism tracing, ease of snooping, drug war use) would be phenomenal.

Right, you showed an example of money but it's not legal tender in the US.

US notes are not worth anything until they are designated legal tender and from then on they can be used as currency. Every note ever distributed by the federal government in the US that has been deemed legal tender is still worth exactly it's face value, at least. $10,000 bills were pulled decades ago but I could take one to any bank today and get change for it.

Since this whole thread was specifically about US dollars I thought that everyone would know that I was also speaking specifically about US dollars. Sorry for any confusion....

50 terrorist with a little determination could turn this country into a cashless society in one week. Let's say that Ackhbar and his cronies take the reciepts of the day from their hotel, Circle K, or strip bar and dumps some smallpox spores on them. They are REDESIGNING the paper currency. No NWO scheme to track you, no big push to go to a "cashless" society.

They are adding some color. That's it. Old notes will be legal tender.

Even the Iraq, the old USSR, and Indonesia have better looking money then ours ... but then ours is still the one they trade in.

We do loose billions of dollars a year due to the counterfitting that goes on. Some other countries actually print our money in an attempt to destroy us. This cheapens our money, stealing money from our treasury without even entering the country. More goverment stupidity? Why change the money and make it harder to counterfeit if you still allow the old counterfeit dollar bills to be used?
Link Posted: 12/10/2002 5:50:30 AM EDT

Because paper money has a lifespan.

Look how often you find old $20's and $50's now. You don't get them all that often in change anymore.

Why cause a panic and tell people their money will be no good by X date, when you can just introduce the new bills as paper money is replaced.

I am afraid it has a lot to do with the US dollar.

The money supply has grown 23% since 2000. Interesting, especially since government spending has increased greatly without tax hikes to finance them. I guess the plan is just print money like crazy and keep lowering interest rates.  Borrow, borrow, inflate, inflate.

It's only a matter of time before inflation really starts kicking in.  It wont be as bad as Weimar Germany, but I think there's going to be a double whammy of unemployment and rising inflation very soon.

yes, greenbacks will always be legal tender.  they will, however, be slowly removed from circulation.

just like we no longer mint the 1792 silver dollars, but if you have one, it is still legal tender worth $1.

granted, you can sell it to a collector for much more than that ... but it's still legal tender.

The reason that the anti-counterfeiting "updates" do not work is because when they change U.S. money, old money is still good. The only way to stop the counterfeiting of U.S. older style notes, is to do an "exchange", as was done with the Euro.....
