Herpy derpy here, but we have far too many countries on the cusp of failure not for a collapse. So what is going to happen, what is going to be the result of the collapse? I for one do not think that it will be a slow slide and a gradual descent. The last time we had anything close to the mess we are in we were delivered of a world wide depression and WWII.

As a Christian American and a study of history, I will say that Americans will undoubtedly rebound from any tragedies, we see it all the time. We are a thriving culture that knows what can result from hard work and determination.
Especially when you go overseas to third world locations where any Americans have a local presence, you will see little "America's" over there, markets, trading, improvements on the living conditions that were shipped over in boxes. The shipping boxes get used for improvements, and then there's always Amazon, filling in the blanks.
We are an entrepreneurial culture by nature, we want the best for our families, we want them comfortable and secure. I don't see that it would be that much different here, especially where most of the infrastructure is already in place.
What obstacles there will be to our prosperity will come from whatever government there will be and how much power the people let them have.
So what if the money becomes worthless, so what if they cut off our electricity and fuel supply, we will flourish, because that's just the way we are.
We see all the doomsday talk and see all these preppers building dugouts and bunkers and booby trapping them. Sure there are going to be those who will try to take advantage of any bad situation and they will be culled out eventually, especially when the law becomes impotent. But when it's all said and done, we will not only survive, but flourish, consider it an opportunity to see how much easier life will be when the government is out of the way.
Consider this, how many of the great inventions or ideas of our time have come from the government? How many have come from individuals working in their own garages? How much money is spent by each to produce greatness? The government is not an enabler, it is an inhibitor.
People will again know who their neighbors are and the cellular hermits will have to come out of their shells and interact, there is a lot of talent and goodness out there, they are just reclusive because of all the fear and negativity thrown at them day in and day out.
Fear it? Nah, I look forward to it!

The "New Deal" tariffs, protectionist trade policy (and everyone else in the world trying it too) did extend the Great Depression years, a decade even longer than it needed to be.

World War II didn't fix the Great Depression, it was ending anyway by then, and people thinking WWII actually did fix the economy is probably the greatest example of "The Broken Window Fallacy" in modern history.

Kind of painful to watch in how Sesame Street it is, but this explains why claiming "broken windows" of war or disasters (or .gov "public works" or "stimulus) "improve" the economy is just bullshit. WWII was "good" in terms of stopping Nazism and Imperial Japan, however, it was a monumental waste economically speaking.

Weren't we supposed to collapse in 2008 then 2009 then 2010 then 2011 then 2012 and then 2013. Now we will collapse in 2014 and that is for sure just like the other for sure collapses.

Yep. Although "unfunded liabilities" is the unfunded costs of the programs in the future going forward. Reduce them all through legislation, and a ton of it goes away.

I do agree there's still a lot they can't legislate away, even were they willing, but if they did, stuff like SS would be the grounds for the mother of all class-action lawsuits by all those who've "paid in" already. The SCOTUS does some sort of bullshit to weasel out of it like Roberts did on Obamacare (I seriously wonder what they had on him, dead hooker pics or what?) , or SCOTUS decides in favor of the American People, and COTUS and POTUS throw up their hands and say "So what? Nice judgment, we're broke."

Instant constitutional crisis. What does the SCOTUS do? Ask the U.S. Marshalls to arrest Congress and the POTUS and force them to pass spending bills anyway? Do the SS and the Capitol Police shoot back if they actually tried?

It would be epic, and provide some LULZ to everything coming down around us.

Mainly I'm hoping it holds off long enough for my children to finish their teenaged growth spurts and reach full adult size, but before they're pregnant with my grandchildren, so if under/malnourishment is an issue due to Mad Max time, or just another Great Depression, it won't be as hard on them as it could be.

My OTHER hope is that the Internet/technology like mobile computing, BitCoin or some other system, 3D printers to make stuff for yourself at home means anyone with a modicum of skill can survive OK, grow/barter food for services in an alternate economy, and the fed.gov, the fed reserve, and the FSA can just FOAD.

A high-tech more peaceful version of Somalia might be the best we can hope for, considering the alternatives.

Generally, I agree, with one caveat: inflation.

With all the all the money being printed, prices will go up.

Massive federal programs are controlling food, housing, and healthcare costs. For most everything else, the sky's the limit.

I like to believe that the South in large part is still "Country Hard", you work your ass off, if you fall down your neighbors will help you. If you sit on your ass - drink too much - get stoned, you can starve for all we care, send us your kids them we will take care of and hopefully raise better.

Come to the Adirondacks sometime. We have such fantastic land in NY and the political climate sucks ass.

Dan_Cooper, short of cutting the Federal budget to 40% of current level, and all that entails - elimination of most Social Welfare Programs, reduction of Armed Forces by a like percentage, means testing Social Security and far more, there is no way out now. This is all politically impossible, the majority of voters will not see the handwriting on the wall, the only way out now is to let it crash.

Edit: And let's be honest, we need it to crash, we need to clean the books, it needs to happen.
