Herpy derpy here, but we have far too many countries on the cusp of failure not for a collapse. So what is going to happen, what is going to be the result of the collapse? I for one do not think that it will be a slow slide and a gradual descent. The last time we had anything close to the mess we are in we were delivered of a world wide depression and WWII.

As a Christian American and a study of history, I will say that Americans will undoubtedly rebound from any tragedies, we see it all the time. We are a thriving culture that knows what can result from hard work and determination.
Especially when you go overseas to third world locations where any Americans have a local presence, you will see little "America's" over there, markets, trading, improvements on the living conditions that were shipped over in boxes. The shipping boxes get used for improvements, and then there's always Amazon, filling in the blanks.
We are an entrepreneurial culture by nature, we want the best for our families, we want them comfortable and secure. I don't see that it would be that much different here, especially where most of the infrastructure is already in place.
What obstacles there will be to our prosperity will come from whatever government there will be and how much power the people let them have.
So what if the money becomes worthless, so what if they cut off our electricity and fuel supply, we will flourish, because that's just the way we are.
We see all the doomsday talk and see all these preppers building dugouts and bunkers and booby trapping them. Sure there are going to be those who will try to take advantage of any bad situation and they will be culled out eventually, especially when the law becomes impotent. But when it's all said and done, we will not only survive, but flourish, consider it an opportunity to see how much easier life will be when the government is out of the way.
Consider this, how many of the great inventions or ideas of our time have come from the government? How many have come from individuals working in their own garages? How much money is spent by each to produce greatness? The government is not an enabler, it is an inhibitor.
People will again know who their neighbors are and the cellular hermits will have to come out of their shells and interact, there is a lot of talent and goodness out there, they are just reclusive because of all the fear and negativity thrown at them day in and day out.
Fear it? Nah, I look forward to it!

Depression and, ultimately, the repeal of the welfare state.  It will be a rough couple of decades, though, while people come to grips with the fact that redistribution of wealth doesn't work.

If we cut everything to the bone, made people fend for themselves, plus the economic uptick just created by the simple confidence America was cleaning up it's financial house, we could retire the debt in a decade or so.

Even faster if we lowered taxes, reduced environmental and labor barriers, to at least something competitive with China, and our FSA was forced to work those jobs, in turn generating even more tax revenue.

Won't happen of course, but we all know it would work.

Actually I think it's far worse than that.  90 trillion in unfunded liabilities is not survivable.

We're all doomed, doomed I say!

Weren't we supposed to collapse in 2008 then 2009 then 2010 then 2011 then 2012 and then 2013. Now we will collapse in 2014 and that is for sure just like the other for sure collapses.

I admit it makes no sense we keep kicking the can down the road and we should collapse by all reason but perhaps reason is overrated?

I could see the total debt eventually all but killing the Federal Government.  Too many obligations, both domestic and foreign, to follow through on them all.  Foreign obligations ending up either trimmed way back or abandoned.  Domestic obligations either "mandated" to the states and mostly ignored, or trimmed back so far that they are all but meaningless.

50 states left to mostly go their own ways in regard to domestic policy, and slowly developing 50 different foreign policies as the Federal Government chokes on too much debt.  Libertarians rejoice while most other Americans think they have been screwed out of their programs and their Social Security.

This scenario will take decades to play out slowly, no one big crisis, just a slow degradation of Federal power and the states and corporations moving into the power vacuum.

Make sure you live in the right state when the music finally stops, we could see everything from domestic socialism in the Big Blue states to a return of the Klan when the FBI isn't around anymore to monitor/infiltrate them, to a few states being gobbled up by big corporations in all but name.

I know this may be shocking to you out in California, but the Klan has had zero power in the South since the early 1920's.  Yes they did pull some crap in Mississippi and Alabama in the 50's but that was 60 years ago .   If the South were to become independent in whole or part, I would bet a lot of FSA (Black and White) find work or head North for more sympathetic ears and softer minds.

I like to believe that the South in large part is still "Country Hard", you work your ass off, if you fall down your neighbors will help you.  If you sit on your ass - drink too much - get stoned, you can starve for all we care, send us your kids them we will take care of and hopefully raise better.

The sad part is I don't I have ever been to a more beautiful place than California.  I spent two weeks there this summer with my family, landed in LA, drove up the PCH to Pismo, San Simeon, Big Sur, went to Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, John Muir Woods, the Jelly Belly factory .  Spent the rest of the time in Yosemite and Sequoia NP and then back to LA to fly home.  I wanted to not like it so much, but I couldn't.

Generally, I agree, with one caveat: inflation.

With all the all the money being printed, prices will go up.

Massive federal programs are controlling food, housing, and healthcare costs.  For most everything else, the sky's the limit.

With inflation at a rate 12-15% per year, the federal debt will be virtually eliminated after ten years or so.  People will want to own their own homes.

If you believe that collapse is a foregone conclusion you're part of the problem.  A man that believes all is lost will not fight.

It is indeed late in the evening, but not yet too late.

Dan_Cooper, short of cutting the Federal budget to 40% of current level, and all that entails - elimination of most Social Welfare Programs, reduction of Armed Forces by a like percentage, means testing Social Security and far more, there is no way out now.  This is all politically impossible, the majority of voters will not see the handwriting on the wall, the only way out now is to let it crash.

Edit:  And let's be honest, we need it to crash, we need to clean the books, it needs to happen.

don't get me wrong, I don't want it, but I am a realist. I can't imagine what else to do that doesn't entail watering the TREE. I have always voted, I have spoken out in my community, I got an education, worked for candidates I thought and hoped would do the right thing, I've paid my taxes, paid off my school loan, paid off my mortgage, fed my children, clothed my children, made sure my kids got a good education, obeyed the laws, never asked the community to support me or mine.

Will be a slow slide. We'll be talking about the good old days, our kids will be too distracted by cheap high tech gadgets to realize anything, and their kids will have an even shittier generation.

Everyone will be poor, electronics cheap, nobody will notice.
