or conversely, some to stay away from.

I will be "free" to choose a new employer after next Friday when my current contract expires and would like an idea of good/evil companies.

Just to help you narrow your suggestions:I have 6.5 years retail mgt. experience (yuk!) and 3 years, 9 mos. IT experience in a call center environment.  I am not too proud to re-invent myself, but I know already that working for a fast food place is no fun.  I am just trying to avoid the "Darth Vader, inc." type companies.

Thanks in advance,
-White Horse

Hey White_horse - any interest in HSN?  To be honest, I don't know what they're like to work for, or if you're anywhere near Tampa.  If you want, I can get you in touch with the right people.

Don't laugh,  but Bealls Department Stores are an extremely strong and ever growing Florida company.

I am the best employer I know, my wife is a close second.

Seriously, if you are thinking of a new experience and since you have had training in management and sales, you may want to think about a career change to being a Mortgage Broker! It is a great job and you work for yourself. I would suggest getting with a company for your training then maybe moving on to being your own broker.

Southwest Airlines is consistently ranked #1 in employee satisfaction.  My cousin's wife works for them and LOVES it.

Yep, Home Shopping Network - it'd probably be a pretty good fit given your retail and IT background.  My Florida-specific geography knowledge is somewhat limited, however.

Good luck on the search, WH.

Yeah, Wiggy!  That's all we need:  more Mortgage Brokers.  There's more brokers in Minnesota than attorneys!  Oh, wait!  That's how I earn my keep!  Never mind.

Lord-I'm glad to hear about your experience with WAMU, but the mortgage division leaves something to be desired.  HUGE company that seemed to value it's infrastructure more than the producing salespeople it had.  (IMHO)

Do you have a Costco down there? I have a friend who has worked there for 6 years. Apparently it's one of the best places to work. She makes 45k a year as a cashier.

The best company i ever worked for was Helzberg Diamonds. They are part of Berkshire Hathaway which is Warren Buffet. If you dont know who he is, he's only the second richest man in america next to Bill Gates. I work in retail sales, in jewelry, and Helzberg is absolutely first class in everything it does. I had to relocate to an area where there arent any so now i have to work for another company.

It goes without saying to avoid Worldcom. AT&T used to be a great employer, but these days they are focused on making the most with the least, which means it sucks to be among the least.
I heard somewhere that FedEx is good, and Southwest Airlines. Another that is supposed to be great to work for is L.L. Bean, but I doubt they have any operations in Florida.
Naturally, it is BEST to work for yourself.

Stay away from aerospace if you want stability. Those poor bastards that thought they would retire from the space station and space shuttle programs are tightening up their resumes now. Defense contractors are up and down, depending on the administration in power at the moment. The only sure thing jobs that I have ever seen is, Funeral buisness, Lawyer buisness, Medical buisness; and all their suppliers. Good luck.
