San Diego police say criminal charges will be filed in a sexting ring involving dozens of students from several high schools and one middle school.

View Quote

According to investigators, it started with a dozen girls sending nude photos of themselves to their boyfriends. Then, the boyfriends passed the pictures on to their friends, creating a web of photo sharing.

"They are fully nude shots, sexually explicit of some of our high school students,” San Diego Police Lt. Chuck Kaye said.

While the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) is not releasing the names of the schools involved, investigators say they have identified 30 students from six high schools and one middle school they believe were involved in the sexting ring.

While it may just seem like fun between friends, possessing and distributing these types of images is against the law and considered child pornography.

Sara Napoli of the San Diego Police Foundation says the group hopes to use this incident as a teaching moment.

It will definitely be a teaching moment when these kids realize they are going to be registered as chomos for the rest of their lives.

Their going to have fun trying to find a place to live. I my state you can't live within 2000 feet of a school if you are on the sex offender list.

Will they even be allowed to go to school, where other kids are, once they are registered as sex offenders?

Don't our cops have better things to do than turn a bunch of horny teenagers into sex offenders? I'm sure there's real pedophiles and rapists in the San Diego area that need jailing.

ETA: or maybe they just made up the whole story to scare other teens. They aren't releasing the names of the teens involved after all, so it could be a ruse.

Probably not. Unless you get shot in Florida for beating up on a guy child porn charges tend to stick with you.

so if you're a teen and take nudies of another teen or yourself, and you turn 18 and still possess the same picture,  should you now be charged with child pornography?

let's say all the teens turn 18 and they continue to swap the pics when the subjects were underaged among themselves, should they be charged or not?

If one of these sexters loses their phone and you're over 18 and pick it up,  you're no in possession of child porn.

To the PDs, that is a good statistic, that they can give to the chief, who can give to the city council, who can brag that "they" arrested and soolved so many crimes. Busting teens for these kinds of violations is a pretty easy job, you don't face any real hostile people, you go home  at night what is there not to like?

BTW : this is a lot easier than busting go after drug dealers and real criminals.

In most states, if you are within a year or two of the age of consent (usually 16 or there abouts) you can have sex with someone else in the same age bracket. The same should apply here.

Zero tolerance and using the criminal code to teach kids how to behave because the administrators are scared to just say "that's wrong and stupid" to the kids.

Welcome to the new world.

Don't they start teaching sex ed in middle schools these days?

If so, why are they not explaining what constitutes a sex crime, which in CA is any sex under the age of 18 regardless of any closeness in age.

IMO child porn laws should reflect the age of consent within the state.

Pretty stupid that in some states you can have sex with a 16 and 17 year old but if you have a picture of said individual that is a federal crime.

I burned, mutilated, and otherwise destroyed multiple items from my youth when these kinds of stories started breaking.

It had never crossed my mind that having these items featuring myself and girlfriends was illegal.

Apparently.

And nobody under the age of 18 has sex in CA? (age of consent)

the material is still obscene by law, the penalties differ apparently on age.

My question is in the above example, what happens when those 17 year olds turn 1 year later and still posess the same photos?

They're not 17 anymore, the material is still child porn by definition, ergo felony time

Won't matter much. When a potential employer googles their name one day,the arrest article will pop up.The names may not be released yet,but they will be soon.

Lesson learned. Don't send nudie pics to your boyfriends. Instead have them all over to view the goods live. That's legal, safe, wholesome and an appropriate way to  express your budding sexuality.

If a 17 year old couple has nudie pics of each other, throw the book at those dirty child porn collectors and brand them for life but if they bang each other in a 30 way orgy they're not child molesting and that's completely acceptable.

Rest easy San Diego. The streets are safe.

I'm one of those guys that would give zero mercy to a child molester/pedophile. But this is just a fucking trainwreck of the law (unless we are not hearing the entire story). The girls started the "web ring" by sending out pictures of themselves? And the guys are being prosecuted? I hope to see a follow up of this. No WAY can they get convicted.

Seeing as how it IS Kalifornia, will the Gay Males be excepted, and the lesbian girls charged?
A double, double standard, like everything else in the liberal paradise?
Exactly how does the thinking work out there in that freakshow?

Sooner or later, the kids pulling this sort of shit, will cause the boundary's to be shifted, because it's obvious that they aren't going to stop.
In the meantime, they are getting screwed over for being stupid kids, doing stupid kid stuff.

No kidding.  This is ridiculous.  It's just teenagers being stupid, and it should be handled by the parents with minimal or no police/court involvement.  There's no victim(s) here.

Police should focus on catching the actual child molesters and rapists.  The bad ones.  Then the legal system should fast-track them to the chair.

Thanks for posting one of the most stupid posts I've ever read here.

Kids will be kids, but how would some of you "fathers" like to have naked pics of their kids passed around the internet/school/etc without knowing it?

I don't see too bad of a problem sharing the pics with their intended recipients, but how about when those pics get passed around like playing cards? I don't think most kids need to suffer the consequences of the stupid laws as written, but I guarantee that some of these kids indeed broke the fucking law and deserve the full weight of it. They knew it and they should suffer. Big boy rules and all that shit.

ETA: I agree with a lot of what has been posted, I'm just looking at this from both sides, playing devil's advocate.
