Hi guys.
Somewhat random question, but you always seem to have great input!

Looking to get a "new" car. I've always loved the boxy/rugged look. Some of my favorites are the mercedes g series, early land cruisers (70s, early 80s) the wrangler sahara and range rovers.
Jeep is just a little on the un-reliable side for me, mercedes and range rover is a little too expensive for anything that has a reasonable amount of miles on it, and finding well-restored land cruisers is tough....

So my question is, are there any good, reliable, reasonably priced cars out there that are similar to this style that I am missing?

Appreciate any input!

I had a Jeep Commander that was decent, never had many mechanical issues with it and it sure was boxy.

What year jeep are you basing your claim of unreliability on?

The 4.0 liter years are about as reliable as you can get for a drivetrain. It's comfortably a 300k+ mile engine.

Low mileage TJ's and LJ's are still out there, and will go for a LONG time.

H2's are pretty "boxy" - they look like a big lego brick with wheels to me. I kinda like them though

I love the look of jeeps, but I have known a bunch of people who have them and they always bring up safety and reliability as issues.
I honestly have nothing to base my statement of them being unreliable other than that.

I honestly know very little about the suv world so I'm learning :)

My last car was a Land Rover. My current car is a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. Just get the Jeep. The are as reliable as anything else you can buy. You need the hard top and the four doors. Ignore anyone who says different. They are stupid and don't know what they are talking about.

You know you can import 25 year old and older G-Wagens and Defenders. I have brought over 2 Defenders from the UK, I would recomend importing from Germany, they are much more honest about condition. You can get a 4 or 2 door G-Wagen for around $10,000-$12,000 in very good condition.

I don't mind an older car and I would absolutely LOVE an older g wagon, but I'm guessing the problem would be parts. Just to get new brakes/pads would probably be like $2k.

Hard to beat a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 inline 6. The engines are pretty much bomb-proof with normal maintenance, lots of aftermarket support and surprisingly capable off-road.

Honda Element is boxy, cheap, and reliable. Plenty of utility as long as you never need to go offroad. If you plan to offroad, the Cherokee fits the bill. Everything else mentioned is pretty pricey.

I want to NOT suggest the FJ Cruiser, at least if you do any city/highway driving at all, or want to fit anyone in the back seat. Also, check out the recalls on it.

I drive my '13 FJ Cruiser in the city and on the highway all the time with no problems, drives like any other SUV. My kids (both ~5'4" tall) fit in the back seat just fine. The seatbelt bracket recall is the only one that has affected mine and it was easily taken care of by the dealer. :shrug:

Hard top is overrated. Soft top is only marginally louder than the hard top and mine has been plenty warm inside on cold days so far. Four doors are overrated too. My two door is doing just fine even hauling a 2.5 year old in the back seat.

What about an older 4runner? I'd personally stay away from anything American that isn't Jeep, then I'd prob pick a Toyota over a Jeep anyways. Always seems like you notice the quality difference when you go to tear into them and you see where they made shortcuts, used shitty fasteners, etc. XJ's are good though, prob be the only Jeep I'd consider buying. Not sure about anything German, I'd imagine though that the parts are really expensive. Japanese OEM and American OEM parts are close enough in cost on average that I wouldn't be worried about it.

Anything with Mercedes written on it is going to be expensive, you can order parts from overseas. That is what I did with most of the parts I needed for my Defenders. You will need someone on the other side fo the Pond to help you with shipping and loading, or you can just go through a boker. I can help you find either of those.

I have been looking for a jeep to get back into jeeping (sold my 87 YJ a few years back) - but holy shit is the dealership proud of that shit. I could buy a friggin Audi SUV for the cost of a wrangler these days. that shit is just wrong. the used market is pretty ridiculous too.
