WASHINGTON — Boeing and Saab are discussing a partnership on the US Air Force’s trainer replacement program, multiple industry sources have told Defense News.

If the arrangement goes forward, it opens the door for each to capture a long-delayed, highly prized Air Force contract to replace its aging T-38 trainers. The service intends to purchase 350 new trainers, likely pushing the contract award into the billions of dollars.

Talks between the companies are advanced and likely to lead to an agreement, the sources said. One said the deal is being held up primarily as a result of an Air Force decision to delay the program due to budget woes.

Looks like it will be a clean sheet of paper.

My prediction will be if the JSF fails, LockMart will get the award as a consolation prize.

If JSF continues, Boeing or Northrup Grumman will get it.

They'll keep flying the T-38 until it drops out of the sky.

If? There is no stopping it. At least, there is no stopping the A and the B variants.

... Remember, a criteria for trainers is that it requires handing qualities similar to the properties of our platforms in service

Whoever they go with, I'm sure they'll choose the best design.

So how do our current trainers rate for the handing qualities of our new generation of fighters such as the F-22 and JSF?

Would a new trainer have significant advantages in handing characteristics than our current ones?

This.

I was an instructor in the early 80's in the T-38B.  Some of the "children" I fly with now have graduated from Pilot Training in the past  5 -7 years and talk about the T-38C model.  I had to ask what they had changed.  They were telling me about the new wing ( I informed them that they had been re winged once in the 80's) all glass cockpit and GPS. Sometimes I feel like a dinosaur.

Any reason they don't want an off the shelf trainer like the Hawk?

Because its the USAF.

But yes, in reality, its hard to make the compelling case that extending the T-45C program wouldn't be at least a B- solution, at a low price point.

However, these programs are about government cheese distribution, er, I mean, industrial base preservation, at this point.

I wouldn't hope that it fails. It brings a lot ot the table. A lot of capability we need.

The hope is the assumptions made at design, redesign, and N=! redesign hold true.

I don't hope for the JSF to fail. I just hope that if it does, it doesn't suck the rest of the DOD down with it.

Most of the assumptions have ZERO to do with stealth.

Sweetman seems to believe that it won't be a new aircraft, but a variation of Gripen.

I am sceptical.
