John Banner was Sgt Schultz.   He fled the Nazi's in 1938 or so. . He had over 70 screen appearances, mostly playing German soldiers of some sort.  This really grated on him as most of his family died in the camps, but it was the only work offered early on.

Werner Klemperer, son of Orchestra Conductor Otto Klemperer, was also a jew.  He agreed to play Col. Klink only if the Germans were made to look like fools.

I saw him once at the San Francisco Symphony.  He did the reading for the symphony.
