Screen is cracked all over.

What are my best options, for those who have been through this?

iPad 2, about 1.5 years old.

I have seen ads from the local phone marts around here, that will do a screen replacement.  Any good?  Should I take it to the apple store?

A friend of mine did that. She took it to the apple store and they replaced it free of charge and she did not have the insurance on it. Have your wife take it and ask, it won't cost you anything to try.

Call around - if it's fully functional with the cracked screen it may be worth repairing.

Keep in mind that a refurb iPad2 16GB wifi-only is $319 directly from Apple - and caries the same warranty as new.

Apple store, and Apple support will charge $249 to swap it for a replacement one. No, Apple will not replace the screen - they have swap the entire unit. It's out of warranty either way since its 1.5 years old.

You can go the 3rd party route, but make sure they know what they're doing. Because if a 3rd party screws it up by taking it apart, and then you decide to go the Apple route - Apple will turn you down for the $249 fee and attempt to charge full retail price - since it will have been taken apart by a 3rd party at that point, and thus, "beyond economical repair".

Women shouldn't be allowed to vote, be seen in public without a male relative as an escort, or handle electronic devices.

Try a local shop.  KT Electronics (as an example, don't know if they are a chain / franchise) fixed my iPhone I started to wash in the laundry for a C note.

Same situation here...asked my 7 year old to hand me the iPad. We were standing on a tile floor...yada yada yada broken screen.

Replacements are fairly cheap and I've replaced iPod screens before so I'm going to do mine myself. Amazon has some replacement kits.

send your wife with it to the apple store. she may get lucky and get a free replacement.

my GF has gotten a ton of shit replaced at the apple store, and she's a fucking menace with objects.

they pretty much told me to fuck off when i showed up with both a shattered ipad and a busted iphone (two separate occasions).

apparently she is much cuter than i am to the eunuchs that work there.

I broke my ipad 4 days after buying it.  Walked into an apple store, told them what happened, and they gave me a brand new one on the spot/

Something about a "get out of jail free card"

I never actually "asked" for a new one, but I was told by a few friends that if it is the first time you have broken an apple device, theres a good chance they will replace it on the spot.

FYI:  I did not buy said iPad from an apple store

As others have mentioned, if you're close to an apple store, it's sure worth a shot, I have read numerous stories of them replacing iphones/ipad/ipods out of warranty.

Ubreakifix

I have used this company multiple times and watched them do the repairs. There privacy policy is strictly enforced so you don't have to be a head case about personal info on your device! Well worth the money

Third party is fine or do it your self. It's really not that hard but does take some patience. Tiny screws and plugs. If your not comfortable doing it anyone who has done it atleast one other time should be fine. Just make sure they use OEM parts. Your don't want a shitty third party screen.

Just kidding.

I've never replaced an iPad screen, but my wife dropped her iPhone like 4 months ago & we replaced the screen. It's been good ever since. Not sure how expensive an iPad screen would be. You could also use this as an excuse to get a new iPad.

For the ipad2  the only screws to remove are the lcd screws (4) to remove digitizer cable... the rest is just glue.... hot air gun and guitar picks are you friend there... we also remove any corner dings that occur from the drop as well... brass rod and a light hammer will take care of dings

Who do you get insurance from?

http://www.worthavegroup.com/

I pay $72 per year for ~$800 coverage. I have made two separate claims in the last two years with no rate increase. The cool thing about this company is that they will send you a check instead of replacing your device. This is good because you don't have to wait weeks to get a replacement. When I dunked my iPhone, I went out the next day and bought a new one. Sent the dead one to WAG and they cut me a check. I currently have 5 devices covered by them. Very happy with their service.
