Any one have, used, or held the .50 Beowulf? Is the upper ok on any AR lower?

edited to add:
Read about it in Gunworld. It is a lenghtened 50 AE case, rebated back to 7.63-39. Launches a 400 grain bullet at 1800 fps. Uses a regular AR lower.

Like you, I've read about them.  Decided to go with the .458 SOCOM, since we had a group purchase on ar15.com.  Ballistics are very similar.

I saw one at the BRC. I had the opportunity to fire it but I declined (what was I thinking?). Neat looking firearm that looks like it has a whole heap of thump to it. Personally, I like my Ferret50 better.

It's a Ferret50.  50BMG, not 50 Beowulf.

The upper sells for 579 bucks...

100 rounds ammo.. 90 bucks..

4 dies for reloading 59 bucks..

mags?   how much ?  included with the upper?

I personaly have no use for a 16" barrel in a 50 Cal. but would consider a 24" in a heart beat..  [:)]

I'll second that.

I have a question tho'.  Why is the Ferret 50 so much more expensive than the Beowulf?  The only difference I can see is a much longer barrel on the Ferret and slightly different ballistics?

Can they make a Beowulf with a 29" or a 36" barrel?  If so, I'd think that this would be superior to the Ferret.

Extrapolating the price, I would think that a Beowulf 29" or 36" shouldn't add but $150 extra.

If they could do that, I'd be in in a heartbeat.

A .50 Beowolf is a "small cartridge".  It fits in a standard AR mag.  It is similar to the .50 AE (Action Express) that the Desert Eagle fires, only that it is longer and has a rebated rim.  It's bullet weight is 325grains.  It has the power of the old 45-70 round.

A .50 BMG is a MUCH longer case and bigger.  It fires a 647 to 850 grain bullet.

That's a .50 cal in it's ammo can.

Yep .50 Beowulf is definately not a 50BMG. 2 different beasts. I've got an upper on order and can't wait. I thought one of the more interesting things mentioned in the GunWorld article was that they're working on several new loads for the .50 Beowulf. Currently they're offering a .325-grain HP and a 400-grain flat point. I can't wait to see what the new load will look like. I also like the mid-length forearm stock on this thing-

I guess I should have phrased my question a little differently.

I guess what I wanted to know is that why is the Ferret upper so much more expensive than the Beowulf.

A Ferret 18" upper is $1500 bux while the Beowulf 16" is only $579.  Assuming that the cost of adding another 18" to the barrel would be the same on both (an additional $150 bux according to the Ferret web site), Why couldn't a comparable .50 BMG upper (barrel length around 36") be built for around $750?

I keep asking this same question with no good answer. Law of supply and demand? I would think that the first manufacturer who breaks the $800 pricerange for a .50 BMG upper would sell the shit out of them so long as it's a quality piece of work.

The 50 Beowulf uses a modified AR upper receiver, while the Ferret 50 uses a completely custom receiver, built from the ground up, capable of withstanding the enormous pressure of the 50 BMG (actually 4x the pressure). Also, from what I can find, 50 BMG barrels cost about 1/2 more than pistol caliber barrels. It's all a factor of overhead, tooling, labor, and materials. And when it comes to 50 BMG it's going to be more, more, more, and more.

The Ferret costs more do to all the reasons listed.  One is liability insurance.

Also, you have to remember, the company that makes the Beowolf does more then just that.  That have that other upper in that other Russian round..... and a bunch of other products.

Here is why the Ferret50 costs so much;

To start with, the Ferret 50 is completely made in house, except for the barrel. The barrel blanks come from Lothar Walther/Germany and are finished to my specs by the US Lothar Walther distributor in GA. Do we get a better barrel from a big name with big $, yes.

All material is mil-spec or aircraft grade with certs, on every piece. Machining is done on state-of-the-art CNC machines. Any part that does not meet tolerance (some as low as .0005") is thrown away. The Ferret50, although simple in appearance is quite complex from a manufacturing standpoint.

Now, I could make an upper for $800. No bipod or the other extras. Simpler brake. Cheaper materials. Greater tolerance. Fixed barrel. The list goes on and on in ways I can reduce the price, but it would be something I would not be proud of. It would shoot, and with decent accuracy. Would look just about the same. But it would not be the best that I could do.

I understand that not everyone shoots at 1000yd, or is a sniper. Most people just want to shoot. But at sometime you are going to want go to the range and try your best to group well at any yardage. If any customer is going to do their best at the range, their gun should be able to compliment that effort.

We have some cool stuff coming out that will add value to every Ferret50. What the goal is, is a total weapon system that can be adapted to any situation. By ShotShow 2003 we will be showing the following: 4140 steel lowers, adjustable stocks with cheek piece, mounting accessories for bench rest shooting, different handguards, Supermatch barrels, .408 CheyTac barrels.

We already are shocking the Supermatch barrels. Some customers have them, and like them. I am working on new projo designs to run in the Supermatch. The .408 CheyTac barrels are on their way and should be here before the end of the year. I can’t wait to start shooting the .408.

OK, Ill get off the soapbox.

Dave

I am setting up the .408 on the current Ferret50 frame. All that is needed to go from .50 to .408 is another barrel, brake and bolt. I will be selling multi barrel kits to save you guys some $.
