Don't forget Guitar Center and DJing places. The DJ and mixer equipment makes use of 19in racks and they are frequently significantly cheaper than data racks.

If you want something low profile, try using 8020 rails. We use it to hold our rack mounted lasers and measurement equipment in the lab. We don't need it in the microscope room, but it would probably be easy to add panels on the side to keep chips and dirt out.

I really was thinking about going with some 8020 or 4040 rails and bolting a couple rack rails inside them and building a nice enclosure. I have basically three parts to the electronics - line AC in and out items, 24VDC and 5VDC, CNC control interface, and the control panel, plus I was going to reconfigure the desktop computer into a rackmount enclosure. Also hoping to add a drawer or two for tooling for it. (Tooling is pretty light - its a 3 axis CNC router that takes up to a quarter inch shank tool in the spindle. (Using a DeWalt 660 trim router for spindle)
I did find the "Lack" rack - apparent an IKEA Lack end table is a perfect 4U between the legs, and 20 bucks, but thats probably a little flimsy for my application. |

Any suggestions on a 4U PC chassis? I'd like to take the existing midtower and convert it to rackmount, just to get everything in the same place.
I'm liking the RSV-L4000 from Newegg as a budget chassis. |

Too many of them bury the drive. Gets hot and takes forever to replace. |

Damn, I wish I was! How much you want for shipping?
 This might be the start of something bad for me...now I'm thinking about a couple dev servers for my web work.I'm not concerned with externally mounted HDs. Its not a server, just a convenient way to keep it interfaced with its equipment in this application. Im probably going to make this much bigger than I need to, to maximize airflow - the CNC controller, power supplies and PID for the spindle are not exactly cool components. |
