Oops, let me retract that last one.

Balthasar Gracian. 1600s Jesuit Monk. All around smart man. His wisdom was Godlike.

Well-leave it to the lawyer to clear things up!!
There are smart people words, and there are dumb people words-oops 'intellectually challenged' people'.
All the smart people need to be considerate of the dumb people and stop being so gosh-darned smart! -that will be easier for all parties.
I especially like the way Duncan seems to take such glee in his displaying prowess in the courtroom. You should be so proud Duncan.

Ok, Duncan. What about literature? Should books be banned from schools because they might contain the word 'niggardly'? Or maybe just edit out the offending word. I believe I've run across the word in many works of fiction.

For those who keep talking about how offensive the word is, how "inappropriate" it is, or how the etymology of the word makes it "wrong" I invite you to read what the American Heritage Dictionary (4th edition) has to say on the matter:

n.
A stingy, grasping person; a miser.

adj.
Stingy; miserly.

------------------------------------------------
[Middle English nigard, perhaps from nig, stingy person, of Scandinavian origin.]

Get it?  It's got NOTHING to do with what you think it means.

Or how about books that contain the other "N-word"?  Two that come to mind are "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and  "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".  Never mind that Twain (Clemens) was essentially satirizing slavery in general, let's get busy and ban those books because they might offend somebody.  And please don't let schoolchildren read an essay believed to be written by Twain titled "Only a Nigger".  He uses the words "nigger" and "faggots" in the same essay!!!  Of course, he wasn't referring to homosexuality, but let's not allow that to stop us in our zeal to prevent socially inappropriate words from reaching the ears (and the minds) of our children.

Disregarding the definition of a word, or taking a word out of context is far simpler than actually having to engage the brain, isn't it?

I have.

How can you be a public servant and use a word that is racically charged?

You may not agree.

But 95 percent of the blacks would be offended.

NOT TRUE.

1. NIGGARDLY is NOT racially charged
2. I want to see your PROOF (Mr Lawyer) of that 95%
3. Larry Elder (A BLACK lawyer that is now a radio talk show host) who I admire and agree with MOST of the time (Notice I did not put a percentage because I cannot back that up with factual percentage points) has made comment on this case. As an INTELLIGENT member of this earth he has stated that it is "Moronic and unbelievable that the board of education is bending over for this woman"
4. We keep taking it up the tailpipe for the ignorant groups that NO WONDER why this country is going down the pipes. Stupidity MUST be corrected, NOT acknowleged.

ONE MORE THING... It is NOT a black vs. white issue. It is an "educated vs. uneducated" issue.

Not to merge two thread together, BUT look at movies like "Blazing Saddles" that movie should offend people more than a LEGITAMITE WORD!!! yet we are going to ruin this teacher's career because of STUPIDITY???

Duncan either you are screwing with us or a Democratic Underground plant. I CANNOT see how you can defend this woman's argument. I hope I am reading you wrong. If I am... clarify it for me please.

(Funny, I am asking him to clarify his position.... kind of what that woman should have asked from the teacher...no?)

The following words offend me and if ever used by anyone in the public school system they should be fired immediately...

1. Diversity
2. Socialism
3. Self Esteem
4. Zero Tolerance
5. Alternative Lifestyle

These words are strange and confusing to me and hurt my dignity as a human being. Rather than understanding them or the concepts they represent I believe the rest of the world should simply bend to my will and cater to my wishes.

HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION: Brit comes to work in the U.S. and she says "So after work I go home and smoke a faggot"

Should she apologize?

For those of you that dont know: Faggot is a cigarette.

Then again these days I think it is more UN-PC to be a smoker than insult someone. [rolleyes]

Something I received in IM, that answered my original questions:
If someone is ignorant, they invariably do not understand how to put their feelings into communicable words. We are talking about people who are content with creating their own definition for niggardly because it 'sort of sounds like nigger'.

A part of black culture and communication that many whites don't understand is the emphasis on emotions, and their expression through tones and sound. Emphasis is stressed in how the words are uttered, rather than what those words mean per se. Tangent here, but it's something to keep in mind. Cultural communication patterns are a very real thing.

White culture: "That girl over there is highly attractive."

Black Culture: DAAAAAAAYUMN!

If a person has a limited vocabulary, it's difficult for them to describe to someone in words what they are feeling when the other person puts emphasis on logical definition rather than tonal inflection and pitch. Communication breakdown. Black person feels frustrated or oppressed, but can't communicate their feelings to white person in a manner where each connect with what the other is saying.

I don't know who sent you that, but I strongly disagree.
If I were black, I'd be more offended by the implication that I'm incapable of speech, than the word 'niggardly'. That crap about nuance and tone is BS. Any 3 year old can speak better than an unintelligible DAAAAAAAAAAYUMN. And saying that blacks communicate in ways that a white person can't understand is racist, IMO.
