Today was fun bitter cold, with 45+mph gusts most of the afternoon! wind chills registered about 25 below, while the air temp hovered around 23 above. The cold was not bad, the wind kept blowing people around because there were a lot of exposed ice! Fun watching drunks trying to walk around the place! I got no fish....

This is the $150,000 Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravangza that is hosted every January with 150 prizes, 25th place wins ATV, which a good friend of mine won it! With a 1.23lbs walleye (yes that a little sized wally!)

This pilot was very skilled! He flew around all day for the media

7 mile drive across lake to avoid the traffic!

At this point the wind shifted directions and was plowing my right side, which half way I would be mostly crabbing to maintain the direction I needed to go!

I was born there ... and yes, I'm glad we moved. I remember the dumpster races at my father's plant. After work they'd get two fullsize roll-around dumpsters and race them across the back of the factory in the wind.

Going to be 74 degrees and sunny tomorrow a bit warmer come Monday.

Winter winds here can get powerful and fierce! I bet that was fun racing the dumpsters!

Its going to get much colder monday here. highs of -10 with lows of -35!

I am not excited for Monday.  I can handle the cold but a high that is below zero is ridiculous.  Looks like it was fun anyway.

Not too bad around Duluth today.  I went cross country skiing in Brule WI before the wind started.  I love fishing, but ice fishing bores me.  I can't sit still.

People that have never been ice fishing freak out when they see you having a bonfire on the lake.

Totally not looking forward to Monday, I hate messing with frozen shit. Everything at work is big, made of metal and lives outside. Makes for a real long work day.

BTW the first pic is fantastic.

23 is pretty warm for January.

This coming week would have been more entertaining with temps well below zero.

July and August? try in middle of winter! we have polar plunge in MN where groups raise money and jump in a hole cut out of the lake!

Coldest I've fished in was -16... It sucked balls, but the bite was on!!!

It was literally soooo cold, that the fish froze almost instantly after throwing them onto the ice.

When I came home, and defrosted them in the sink... The fuckers came back to life!!!! Craziest shit I've ever witnessed!

I saw a lot of beer cans get blown with the wind, I wonder how many beer cans would be found on the shoreline at the end of the wind path! Of course the Jaycees have bunch of people working after everyone leaves, to clean up all the mess. Majority of the people working there are volunteers. I need to take one year and do my part volunteering.

For temps, anything under 32 degrees is freezing nothing to worry, but if it gets above its not really a big concern unless it skyrockets to 70 degrees. I have been on the ice when it was 55-60 degrees outside, sure it was slippery and wet. It all depends on how thick the ice is. Some spots could melt faster than other spots.
