Well that's what they did when the Maersk Alabama was captured.  They flew them all the way from VA to do the mission.

Energy issues, a failing economy, high unemployment, shitty relations in the middle east.

All we needed was a war involving a former French colony to cover the entire 1970s.

Mission basis, not geography basis.  Hostage rescue is probably gonna drop on ST6 no matter where it is if Navy assets are used.

Curious, there are a several other highly-skilled "operator" groups out there, specifically Delta, DevGru (I know they are SEALs but they are different), and even SOG/SAD...so why is it normal SEAL units seem to be the ones leading hostage missions?

I think you've got it the wrong way around.

These guys were mercenaries working for Khadaffi. He gave them weapons and, when he fell, these guys returned to Mali where they started a war against the central government.

I imagine their is a multi-national task force of some sort, probably lead by USSF and SAS for just such occasions.
