I am planning on buying a TV for our master BR for Christmas. I have room to go about as big as 37" diagonally.
If it werent so heavy, I'd move my 37" plasma from the den to the BR but that bitch is HEAVY. About a 5 year old plasma. I am figuring there will be some great deals this coming weekend and wanted to hear the opinion of Arfcom. I want a great HD picture and light weight, easy to hang on the BR wall above a dresser/mirror. Tons of inputs are not really needed as I doubt anything will ever be plugged in other than the DirecTV receiver, so an HDMI or 2 will likely suffice. I havent really researched TV's lately and dont keep up with the tech anymore. Is LED considered the best now or do Plasma and LCD still factor in? Looking for a nice compromise between value, overall quality of picture and lightweight. What should I be looking at? |
|
I think LCD is the benchmark now. (LED is just an LCD display lighted with LED's.)
Plasma is kinda old school now from what I gather, since LCD offers a lot of benefits over it. Can't make any specific recommendations, except that I like Samsung and JVC. |
|
get a 37 LED on black friday.
I bought a 55" LED 3D 240hz Samsung with built in Wifi. and I love it. i have a 46" LCD Samsung that is in my bedroom. I love a big tv. especially in the bedroom, who needs mirrors when you have a camera hooked up to the big screen. |

LCD can't get the blacks right and are more prone to artifacts. I'd be looking at an LCD 3D. Circuit City has some smoking deals for Black Friday. Do your research, OP. There's tons of info out there. |

For that screen size 1080P will be irrelevant. Save some cash and stick to 720P. Plasmas are still the best display you can buy, Panasonic plasmas in particular. But again, in that size, also wont matter. Pretty much any newer, brand name (Samsung etc.) LCD should serve you well.

Removed the TV from the bedroom 7 years ago and we don't miss it.

Any Black Friday "deals" will be purpose built to the price point.

I'm running a couple of JVC 55" LCD projection TV's right now, and they're outstanding. I know when I looked at plasmas they weren't as razor-sharp as the LCD's ... instead they were kind of "soft-looking" to me.
And as for blacks, you can get LCD's with contrast ratios of 50,000:1 now, and some people complain that the darks are TOO dark! I guess it's a matter of preference, but LCD is still my choice. |

50" Panasonic plasma in my bedroom - I love it.
Plasma (especially in the bedroom) has the best picture, at least in my opinion. |
|
Plasma is dead and has been dead for years.
Buy a LED (that's a form of LCD that uses better back-lighting) on BF that has a name you recognize. You'll do fine. |
|
Move your plasma to the bedroom and upgrade that TV to something bigger and nicer. Too heavy? Ask your husband to help.

Look for a Samsung LED this weekend. You should be able to find a 37" or even a 40" (about 37" diagonal) for not too many bucks. We bought the wife's Mom a Samsung 37" last year for under $500.
|
|
My 46" Samsung LCD is considerably heavier than my 55" Samsung led thin.
But my old Sony 27" CRT was like a ton of bricks. I wouldn't hang that thing from anything other than an I beam. |
|
Trying to determine if I need a "smart" TV. I was not really for the most cutting edge, but I also dont want it to be obselete when I get it home.
Just not really sure if the "smart" attributes are that important. And Wi-fi for that matter. Is any of it needed to just watch TV? Also, does anyone know if DirecTV offers any setup that would allow me to not have to have a receiver mounted right by the TV? Couldnt I just get a RF remote and then put the receiver in the basement? Trying to minimize clutter around the TV in the bedroom. Lastly, does anyone know of any smoking deals that can be had this week on the internet and just have it shipped? Newegg, Best Buy, Crutchfield? Something along those lines? Would rather avoid the crowds on Black Friday. |

A tv in the master bedroom does not compute unless it's for "how to" videos.

I have been running with Sony LCD's for years. They have been flawless. My 32 inch Sony on my comp has in excess of 15 thousand hours on it. Maybe closer to 20 000 by now, I haven't been in the service menu in a while.
That being said, I have never seen a Vizio Tv that I haven't been impressed with. My friend had one that just had a gorgeous picture. |
|
They discontinued the Vizio I just got, luckily a few Walmarts around me still had some. But it's the best TV I've ever seen.
32" with 1080p, not 720 like most TV's in this size range. It also has a wireless-N adapter (and an ethernet port if you're going wired). Has an app store built right in, so I can play Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu+, YouTube, Facebook, etc. all on it. And it's pretty dern snappy and stable. It's also 3D ready, even came with some glasses. The picture is amazing too. It's last year's model, but it beat out any of this year's stuff that I saw. But since they are phasing them out, you can pick it up for only $348. MSRP was around 450-500 if I remember right. Lot's of places to buy them online too. http://www.walmart.com/ip/VIZIO-32-Class-3D-LCD-HDTV-1080p-with-VIZIO-Internet-Apps-1080p-60Hz-E3D320VX/15992329 |

You might not think you'll use the features now, but you will. I promise. We don't even have cable or satellite hooked up to ours. We just stream from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and from our personal media server that's full of videos I've downloaded or ripped. |

WiFi is the only way to go.
Stream Netflix etc to your TV. Also my TV in my LR has not box. I have the attached uverse box in my basement. Buffalo electronics IR repeater hooked up using cat5 from the IR eye in the LR to the distribution box in the basement.the eye looks like a decora electrical outlet with a tiny square IR eye I. The middle. It blinks green when the remote button is pressed. I think it has 4 outputs. So with the one eye you can control 4 IR devices. I ran 25foot HDMI cables from basement to decora style double HDmi box behinfld the TV. Can't see anything very clean. I also have the 110v power outlet behind the TV. No wires. With kids. Especially young ones. Loose wires suck. |

plasma runs hot and uses more power, plus heavier too - LED/LCD is the way to go, less power, heat and weight.

Don't do that unless you want a bunch of holes in your wall. Get a $15 stud finder and do it right. |

Just trying to determine if I need a "smart" TV, etc. And wondering who has the best deals on the internet. I have a pair of smart Samsung plasma TVs. The smart part is the internet connection where you can check the weather, stock market, email, facebook and many other things from the TV screen. You can also get Netflix and a couple other of the streaming services with it's WiFi connected to your router. I bought the matching Blu-Ray players and they too have the identical smart TV interfaces. Sometimes we can't tell if we're in the disk player or TV using the darn thing. That said we don't use the feature very much at all because we use an iPad to consume the Internet while in front of the TVs. Our remotes are dual-sided where the one side is a keyboard and the other side is the remote controller for the TV. You don't want to lose that remote as they cost a ton. If you don't buy a smart TV you might just by a smart Blu-Ray/DVD player if you think you'd really use the service. |

I REALLY love my 55" Samsung SMART TV. its a 6500 series that has wifi built in and VERY lightweight. I'm sure they make them in a 32" or 36" that can fit in your spot. try to stay at 6500 series or above.
