...I can't bring myself to do it, as I don't currently have any guns in that caliber and it's stupid expensive to feed them with commercial ammo. I want a FAL or a PTR badly. For those of you who reload, how much is it costing you per round for 7.62?
|
|
SAMCO Global has port for $0.35/rd.
Get a 7.62 rifle now, thank me later. |
|
I use Hornady A-Max bullets and I only buy 100 at a time and they are $27, Varget is about $19 a lbs and primers are $29 per 1000 so match ammo for me is about $0.45 or so a round. I would think one could load bulk ammo using pulled bullets for -$0.30 a round? |
|
I'm with you OP.
I find the old NATO "battle rifles" to be quite appealing, but I don't see myself keeping one fed. I don't see 7.62x51 or .308 in my future, unless I find myself in a position where I'm making some bank. I'm a caliber consolidator, and it's just not part of my plan.
|
|
Buy now as they only go up.
Whatever you buy put an equal amount away. Before long you will have a stash. Glad I did in the early '90's & thought it was pricey then. |

Just buy one. You're not going to shoot it nearly as much as the others so you don't need as much ammo...
|
|
Typical ARFCOM Answer: GET BOTH. Here is the thing. You don't have to blast a hundred rounds of ammo every time you go
to the range. That is what .223 and 7.62X39 is for. Hell when I go out with my DPMS 308. I shoot the hell out of my 10/22 and then finish up with a mag or two of .308. I bought a bunch of SA back when they were $25 a battle pack. Wish to hell I bought a Fucking Pallet of that shit back then. |

It is, in my opinion, a do it all rifle. |

I've got an M1A and a FAL but I'm finding myself getting more and more serious about a SIG 716.
I looked at a SCAR 17 today. Very light, very expensive ($3200). The SIG 716 is about the same price as a new M1A. |

For those of you who reload, how much is it costing you per round for 7.62? I bought several thousand pulled bullets from patsreloading.com a short while back. Paid $.09/bullet for them, if I remember. They're out now, but it looks like hi-techammo.com has US pull down 147gn for $120/1000. .12 for bullet .07 for powder (WC844 also from Hi-Tech) .03 for primer ––––––––––––––––- .22 on your brass HAZMAT and shipping will make it higher. |

Just do it. If you don't do it now, you'll regret it even more in the furure when it's even more expensive.

I wouldn't buy a factory built FAL nor a PTR. If you go with the FAL get a kit and either build it yourself or have one of the excellent FAL smiths build it. You might consider cruising the FAL Files market place and buy a complete rifle that was built by one of the good guys or if you're lucky an early DSA assembled rifle.
If you want a G3 clone forget the PTR, they've had alot of problems with trunnions cracking and other U.S. parts failing. One of the latest problems is the bolts crumbling. The way to go for a G3 clone is to buy a PTR receiver, RCM barrel and as many HK parts as 922 will allow and have a smith who specializes in HK weapons assemble it. You could also look for a Springfiled SAR 3/8. They were G3s made in Portugal and Greece under HK license. I still have 762 nato i bought for $99. a case of 1,000, man we won't see those days again. |

762X51, .45ACP, .357 and 12 ga.
I don't want anything else but I do have a M4gery and a SCAR in 5.56 |

Those pulls downs are great. Half the price I pay for Sierra 168/175gr JBTHP pills and work great in battle rifles. My PTR freaking loves the 168gr Sierras. |

However there was a bunch that came in that was corroded/tarnished. Samco says they cleaned it, which leads me to believe it was pretty bad. That's a good price considering current 7.62 asking prices, I would pass on it if you're not willing accept that you may get some crummy ammo. The SCAR-17S is an absolute joy to shoot. |

No it's not match ammo but neither is surplus or American Eagle, etc. Like was said you won't fire it as much anyway no matter what the ammo cost. |

Yep, this - I remember buying and stashing the South African "battle packs" of .308 about 10 years ago, and I thought the stuff was expensive back then. Now I am so thankful I did that. |

Using LC LR brass, 150 gr Hornady FMJBT, Wolf Primers and Varget. Also bought a side rail mounted brass catcher so should get many loads out of the brass cheaping each loading. |

Thanks for the heads up. he means buy a port buffer. the clamp on, and are extremly low profile, with a small rubber bumper. it keeps the brass from being dented, and thrown into the next county. without a port buffer, mine would dent the brass in the neck, AND again in the wall, IF you could find it. Unfortunately my new ptr, has a welded scope rail, and a port buffer wont fit it, im trying to figure out how to get it to fit anyway... |
