Shadows more or less match up, taking surfaces into account, but even then indoor lighting can come from many sources. Family in background are in soft focus - which I'd expect.

The only thing that would make me wonder is the position the camera would have to be in to get the shot. Either the photog is very short, or the guardsman let some photog take his picture at groin level, or else the guy took the picture while seated, holding a digital camera in his lap.

The slick sided upper and triangular handguards is an oddity, but explainable. The only reason someone would photoshop such an uncontroversial picture is because he's really sitting at home in his underwear, using photoshop to piece together pictures, making the newspaper think he's actually working. Nah.

(and yes, I'm sure the [National] Guard looks a lot more like "middle" america in profile than the 19 year olds fresh out of boot)

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the National Guard get the hand-me-downs from the regular forces. That would explain the dated M16. It is an unloaded M16. All show to make us feel safer. PC at its best.

Note the web belt is so old as to have metal rings and keepers....That and really the lighting and shadow does not look right to me, unless the photog used a flash up close,(which I doubt in that setting and looking at the background lighting.)

Verdict: Photoshop job.

Hmmmmm, is right !! it looks like a partial slab side. the upper portion of the fence is there but the the part that extends down around the release button is MIA.

Or maybe it's just a photo. I remember it from the paper, and it looked real enough then. Not too many pics of locals holding AR style rifles in the LA Times!

It was also absolutely consistent with other reports of Guardsmen with unloaded rifles (happens they deployed that way during much of the LA riots, too!). It is also what I saw when I went through the airport myself shortly afterwards- old gear, no mags, etc. They did make me take off my boots though!

Sad, but true...

seems to me like that extended index finger ,for(safety purposes)without a mag. locked and loaded ,is totally useless except for a long nose picking session. or maybe he just pushed the mag release and dropped his load and is hoping no one noticed.

Looks like a early M16 ( AR15) probably not a Mod 01 or 02. Probably Air Guard .
Hell that guy would be on the Skinny program in my unit ! of course when U have a 16 you don't need to run very fast !

At 16 airports across the state, the troops were banned from patrolling with loaded weapons, according to guardsmen interviewed by The Philadelphia Inquirer for Sunday editions.

Must be on a state by state basis. Here in AZ, we patrolled the Airport with ammo, and my unit has new equipment (M16A2, M4s on the way next year, MK-19s. SAWs)
Probably a CA thing.

Not to slam the guard, but I have never heard of an instance where the guard has had ammo.

How about Hartsfield in Atlanta and the Miami airport. In both cases, Guardsmen showed my loaded mags in their rifles and an officer showed me that he had a round in the pipe of his M9. I know, some people will say they shouldn't do that, but it all depends on how you approach them. In all cases, I started talking to them about my prebans and they were really cool about it.

This weekend, some Guardsmen were recruiting outside a mall here and I was on my way to go shooting after I picked up 4 boxes of clays. I pulled up to where they were and showed them one of my Garands and my M1 Carbine. They were oohing and aahing over the Garand. I had to show them how you would load one and told them about M1 thumb. They were impressed. One older soldier is the only one that knew what they were.

You can't see it in this picture real clear but the father is handing his son a handgrenade,so he can overtake the solder in the pict whom acually has a bayo affixed to his seaminly usless rifle.

Iam thinking non-legit, I doubt that the Air National Gaurd has issued pre A1 m16s in over a decade. plus hte triangular hand gaurds are in awful good shapw for a thiry five plus year old service piece. It appears he is wearing a heavy winter weight BDU jacket and summer weight pants (I know in the army that this would get you in real deep kimchee, can't say about the Air Force),Top pressed, pants fresh out of the brass tumbler. The old Pistol belt I can understand, I am sure there are plenty of active duty guys who are using the old style belts today. If this is really a picture of a gaurdsman, then I think the CA NG really needs some work, how in the world are they supposed fight with antiquated equipment, and how would you expect a guy who can't even match his pants to his shirt when he knows he is going to be working in the eye of the public, to remember all of that stuff he learned in basic fifteen years ago?
