Guess things are getting bad
It’s being called the “poop burger”. Japanese scientists have found a way to create artificial meat from sewage containing human feces. Somehow this feels like a Vonnegut plotline: population boom equals food shortage. Solution? Synthesize food from human waste matter. Absurd yes, but Japanese scientists have actually discovered a way to create edible steaks from human feces. Fresh food that lasts from eFoods Direct (Ad) Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=u1N6QfuIh0g |

Be thankful we live in the largest agricultural nation in the world.

Actually, this sounds like they just harvested the bacteria and synthesized it into some sort of meat substitute. Not a whole lot different from the way plants take the nutrients from manure and turn them into plant matter, the bacteria have taken the nutrients in the sewage and turned it into 'animal' matter. I'd try some (one? Not sure how one delineates meat that can basically be made in sheets). You scoff, you say 'eeeew', but this is the beginning of food generators for long term space projects.

Yeah, the idea of eating it seems foul, but as long as it is free of pathogenic bacteria it's really no different than eating any other source of protein. |

One of the scientists was trying to do this in Jonathon Swift's 1726 novel, "Gulliver's Travels", in the section: A Voyage to Laputa.
