Remington (not ruger) made the model 700.  And I know for a fact they made some in .270.

Model 77.  No model 700 for Ruger.  Model 700 is Remington's action/rifle.

You should look for where it is stamped "Remington" on the barrel. I'm sure its there. Then point it out to him.

The Hive is right.  Remington makes the 700 series of rifles.

Ruger makes a M77 serious of bolt action rifle.

Sometimes people get confused with the name of a cartridge like 308 Winchester or 204 ruger.  And don't understand how a 308 Winchester shell can be fired in a Remington

Ok, there possibly could be a source for his confusion.  Years ago, Ruger offered the 77 in what was referred to as a "round top" receiver.  This receiver didn't utilize Ruger's proprietary integral base/ring set up, and instead used standard 2pc Remington 700 scope bases.  Meaning, with a round top 77 receiver, you used a Remington 700 scope base.  I have one of these myself, and its a neat rifle.

Of course, you're friend is likely mistaken, but it could be an honest mistake.
