Checking 24 lbs. of 9mm on my airline checked luggage?

I've got 1000 rounds of 9mm that I got for free from a law enforcement training today. Problem is that I need to fly home. I'm allowed 11 lbs. of checked ammo on Delta but each 500 round case weighs 12 lbs. I know I can get one case through as I've checked over 11 lbs of ammo before, but do you think I should risk trying to check 2 of them in my suitcase? They are not that large so I may get by with it. I once checked 16 lbs. of .308 ammo and it arrived with no problem. My only other alternative is to go by a UPS hub and ship one or both of the cases of ammo.

What would ARFcom do? Try to check both cases in my luggage or ship one of the cases through UPS?

I checked 700 rounds of TULA 9mm in my airline luggage just a few months ago and it made it no problem. That is why I'm tempted to try to check 1000 rounds. What do they do, just confiscate all of the ammo?

Guess I'll run by a UPS hub tomorrow morning.

I'd probably ship it, or call the airline and ask what extra baggage fees run.

I wouldn't be that stressed out. The guys with the real hassle are the international trap shooters. Most carry at least 1,000 rounds of 12 gauge to the event for practice, and guns that range in value from $4,000 to $30,000. A local girl who competes in some of the European events had an airline temporarily misplace her $25,000 trap gun last summer. It was a loner from Beretta while they made her custom order gun.

If you are flying armed, put it in your carry on.

The airline will charge you a small fortune to take that with you, UPS will be far cheaper.

DOT sets the rules, but the airline reduce limits to international limits. I would ground ship. A little info I found on XDTalk

XDTalk ammo

Under 49CFR 172.101 HazMat Table ammunition is allowed to ship up to 30kg (66lb) by air as ORM-D.

But, and it's a big but, we are dealing with the airlines and typically they follow international rules concerning how and what they carry. Easily understandable as why have one set of rules for the USA and another set for Lower Ebola and another set for Upper Ungawastan, etc. International rules state that the most ammunition that can be carried by air is 5kg (11lb). Where it's stated I don't know.

Additionally the airlines have a rules of carriage that by buying a ticket you are implicitly stating you will comply with.

So, the airlines say the most you can bring as checked baggage is 5kg and by buying a ticket you say that you will comply with this rule and everything else on the rules of carriage, you're stuck.
