Atheists and humanists in the military continue to come together
throughout the world. From Japan to Italy and throughout the US, leaders are stepping up. Communities are forming as well, in some cases with the help of local chaplains. The following is a series of reports on successes at the grass-roots level. On-post groups, collaborations with military and civilians groups, and individual points of contact are all coming together as the military backbone of the international network of atheists and humanists. MAAF also works with other organizations such as the International Humanist & Ethical Union, the UK Armed Forces Humanist Association, and associated members in locations such as Australia and Canada. One international effort is to provide assistance to Nadav Heipert, an Israeli Defense Force soldier seeking his own freedoms within an overtly religious military. Having a supportive outside organization gives him comfort that the IDF does not provide. The IDF includes religious oaths and supports a religious Constitution. His situation is legally different than US military personnel, but his need for a connection with like-minded individuals is not different. The UK Armed Forces Humanist Association is looking for US and other members in Qatar to grow a local group. Athena Holter-Mehren in Turkey has started MAAF Incirlik. Tom Essenpreis is a new point of contact looking for more members in Kandahar, Afghanistan. These international efforts are new, but reflect the reach of our membership and a history of prior local groups around the world. http://blog.militaryatheists.org/2011/06/local-military-humanists-continue-to-thrive/ |

I don't want to spend my free time going to a pizza party with Jesus, so what makes them think I want to spend it talking about how Jesus doesn't exist?

I don't understand the one in Turkey-a Turkish co-worker's husband had to go fulfill his reservist obligation there a few years ago, and their military is so secular that NO relgious texts are allowed in their BCT units.

I'm more inclined to believe in the damnation of somebody who judges others purely on their spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) than by their accomplishments, such as going to war for your ass. If you're a humanist, does that mean you're like racist against animals?

And the need for a supernatural Big Brother. And the recycled stories. And the voluminous hidebound dogma. Sure, their identical. Don't get me wrong though, this is one of my concerns: http://images.wikia.com/southpark/images/0/01/GoGodGoXII13.jpg I'm just saying that when a bunch of people with the same belief system gather together on a regular basis, its basically a religion. I was in the service with atheists and never remember it being much of an issue one way or the other. Sounds like a pretty much manufactured issue to me. |

Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Depends on how you define religion. For myself, any group can have a dogma, but to have a religion you have to have dogma and a supernatural component. I'd even go so far as to say that the strong atheists fall in the religious category as they assert an unprovable position. |

It's inevitable that people are going to want to get together in groups of similarly minded individuals. Not believing in the supernatural is as good as believing in it when it comes to finding a reason to do so. |

So they talk about the non-existence of God or any other super natural power? Sounds like it's a blast. If you don't believe in it cool, why schedule meetings to talk about not believing in it? Unless they have really good beer and BBQ.

Atheist activists are 100% more annoying than any christian I've ever met.
Keep your religion (or lack of) to yourself. |

Whatevs.
I claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of my own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. |

There are so many things that I don't believe in.
Should I form a club for each and every one of them? This is asinine. |
|
Something to keep in mind is that associating with people for religious reasons leads to more social activities than just reading the bible (or whatever) together. A lot of "community" forms as a result of it.
(I know community is a dirty word, but I think you know what I mean) So if atheists want to do a little community forming without the religion, more power to them. |
