I can think of much more appropriate words to use instead of "cool" but yes that is a powerful tool for seeing the devastation caused by the tsunami.

the technology and software behind it is cool, the images themselves are quite depressing.

Unbelievable devastation. Some of those villages are just gone.

ETA: I think seeing how powerful and destructive our planet is IS cool. It ruins lives, but such is life on Earth. What can you do but watch in awe?

Also the saturation of the farmland with salt water will prevent the growing of crops for a very long time, or so I am told. No farming, no community, so the area ,may become a unhabitited zone.

Took me a few seconds to figure out how to work it. The technology is very cool.
That is a lot of destruction. |
|
I think that by the time this is over, the death toll will be very high.
|
|
It's amazing....now they are saying the death toll may exceed 10,000 people in Myagi Prefecture alone....
I still can't get past the video of the tsunami as it approached the roadways...the cars and trucks just stopped....one can only imagine the horror of seeing all that shit comming to envelop you...and knowing you are going to die in just moments. Just....damn... |
|
Looks like a lot of Japan did after firebombing/nuking in WWII. Entire communities destroyed.

chilling
nature makes General Sherman look like pathetic pauper |

That was fascinating.

You said it, brother. Some serious skin issues, considering all the things going on that no one gets worked up over. Unfortunately the politically correct nonsense is even affecting those who are supposed to be "conservatives", further highlighting why the game is already lost. Welfare state, hundreds of thousands of babies killed every year, anti-Christianity and anti-Male everywhere, but no one sez anything or gets worked up over any of that. Some unavoidable environmental catastrophe and the estrogen just kicks on full gear... |

Quoted: I think that by the time this is over, the death toll will be very high. No kidding. If the tsunami hit less than 10 minutes after the quake, how many of these people were really able to get out of the path of the wave and debris? |

Looks like that area is quite agricultural. . .anybody know what is primarily grown in those fields? Rice? Soybeans?
|
|
The video of the flood washing that town away was simply surreal. It reminded me of a scene from the movie 2012. Just no hope if you are caught in that.

I just heard on the news that the tsunami moved the island of Japan eight feet !!!
And now there is a volcano erupting there. Damn. |
|
I think the NYT presented the pictures a bit better, YMMV:

How much time was there between the quake and the wave? I heard 30 minutes on average. Sadly, the death is going to be very high on this one. I doubt Japans defense/civil system can handle a catastrophe like this one. |
|
What are the time stamps for the before and after photos? The Sendai Airport one seems a bit "odd". |

That is incredible. And very sad. God bless all those people.

I doubt Japans defense/civil system can handle a catastrophe like this one. The earthquake struck at 14:46:23 JST. A wave was observed flooding Sendai Airport at 14:55 JST. That's less than 10 minutes for the area closest to the epicenter of the quake. The folks within a mile or two of the coast never had a chance unless they were able to get into a concrete/steel structure and get up several floors. |

Looking at the pictures I can't see where the numbers aren't in the tens of thousands. |
|
dam, 9 minutes for those closest to the impact.
Ya, its going to be way over 10,000. The small community here on the cost near Houston that got flattened from hurricane Ike lost over 300 people and it was nothing like in the pics of Japan yet they had days to prepare. |

If the tsunami hit less than 10 minutes after the quake, how many of these people were really able to get out of the path of the wave and debris? That's is scary to think. 10 minutes isn't long enough to get over the first natural disaster, much less prepare for something like that. For most of the coastal residents, 10 minutes wasn't even enough time to get out of harms way. |
