I need a universal docking station for my laptop that will run dual monitors.  I would like to have dual's without having to use the laptop monitor as one of them. Is this possible, what do you guys recomend.

There is no universal port replicator. What kind of laptop is it?

And does it have a VGA output on it?

I have only been saftisfied with true laptop specific docking stations.

USB based solutions have been very shitty. Maybe USB 3.0 will fix that, we'll see.

It is a Toshiba. It does a serial port for an external monitor, but I do not like the way is sets up the screens. It make's the external monitor always be on the left, and it is driving me crazy.

You mean other than those made by Targus, Kensington and a handful of other companies?

OP, the problem you'll run into is that most port replicators won't do dual monitors.  Matrox makes a dual monitor adapter link, but it just deals w/ monitors, not extra usb, etc.

On a different note, I have a dell laptop with a dell docking station but it only has a single output for video, I use an "eVGA UV+" to run a second 19" dell monitor. It's a USB gadget that works great, been using it a year or more with no issues, costs about $70 iirc.

You can fix that.

right click your desktop > propterties > settings tab.

Then DRAG your monitors around in the little box. It will move them to whatever orientation you put it in. Top bottom/ left right.

Then hit apply.
