House Votes To Scrap INS
Two New Agencies Would Be Created
A bill that would scrap the Immigration and Naturalization Service has passed overwhelmingly in the House.
In its place, the bill would create two new agencies to handle enforcement and immigration services.
Lawmakers didn't mince words in voicing their disdain for the agency.
Many called it the worst-run agency in the U.S. government -- even before the bureaucratic foul-ups related to the Sept. 11 hijackers.
Just Wednesday, the Bush administration signaled support for the bill. It originally wanted to keep the agency intact.
Attorney General John Ashcroft said it's a good first step. But he's looking to his former colleagues in the Senate to write a bill more to his liking.
