I was taught in the Marine Corps never to use my magazine as a monopod while in the prone. Even the various military simulators (FATS, EST) will not allow you to rest your magazine on the deck with out causing a weapons malfunction. I have had no jams/FTF with my personal rifle (RRA Entry tactical) using pmags and USGI mags w/ green followers. If you watch Magpul Dynamics Art of the Carbine part 1, Costa says don't do it and in the background Travis says something like it comes down to trusting your gear. I was watching one of Larry Vickers TV shows and he says you should monopod, and if your mags won't work from that position get new mags. So what says GD?

I don't do it, but mainly cuz it doesn't put in the proper position for myself.
I dont do it, because its not solid. I also see guys cramming their elbow into their stomach and resting the mag on the palm of their hand, and I dont do that either. some guys grab the mag and pull back and I think that is bad form too. Probably doesnt make a shit of difference anyways.

If you mean do I read magazines while I am single pointed on the shitter then the answer is yes.

I was taught in the Marine Corps never to use my magazine as a monopod while in the prone. Thankfully lots of actual combat experience is reforming what even the notoriously intransigent USMC is teaching people these days. Using the magazine to help support the weapon in prone is perfectly acceptable. It works, it does not cause malfunctions, and it makes it easier to shoot bad guys. |
You have to separate what you what you taught never to do on the KD range with what is perfectly acceptable in a real-world scenario.
The KD range is for marksmanship training. Tactical is tactical. ...or something like that. |
The master marksman training guys in Little Rock did some studies a few years ago on the issue and found that there was no problem resting the mag on the ground, that it was an old wives tale for the most part.
I have been doing it in comps, training and for marksmanship for the last 3 years. I have never had a malfunction induced from this method. I find that shooting at distance, I prefer this, as it is more stable.
What!?!?!? And take the risk of scratching a magazine?
NO WAY JOSE. |
Pat Rogers wrote an article in SWAT magazine about this within the last year or so.
IIRC he said that although it was a big no-no in the Marine Corps, he is okay with it and to use it if you need to. |
The only weapon with which I've seen that make a difference was a clapped out M1 Carbine with some problematic 30 round mags. The difference made was positive though
Damn thing wouldn't feed without positive upward pressure on the mag. |
I was taught not to do it.
I have always done it anyway. I form a sort of a tri-pod with my arms and magazine. it is more stable and I've never had a malfunction because of it. Why not shoot from the most stable position you can find? |
In the right soil or grass , yes. But for 17 years I did not because of my years in the marine corps. I got over my indoctrination at Moyoc.

No I don't. My pmags will scratch up shooting benches, concrete, plate steel or whatever surface they contact.

i was taught to do it at RTC less than a year ago. Believe the military has done an about-face on this & now teaches soldiers to USE THE MAG as a monopod. USMC has not caught on yet. 3gun/"ipsc" or USPSA shooters figured it out years ago. Does not cause stoppages. Increases rate of accurate fire. I.e., full of win technique. |
I read "Do you monopod with your magazine in the prone?" as "Do you monopod with your magazine on the throne?" and thought it was some odd question about reading in the bathroom.
I prefer 20 round mags for just that reason - I don't want the rifle that high off the ground.

Why not shoot from the most stable position you can find? I was taught to do it in the Army as long as it was comfortable and I could be in a good firing position. The above are the reasons I was given. |

Won't harm your gun or cause jams. Perfectly acceptable. Correct answer ^ |

Kind of like "tea cupping" a pistol. ...Only not really at all like that... |

Better than no support and in certain positions you may have to have your mag hard on the deck. The reason the mil says "to not to" is with worn out/beat up magazines it may cause malfunctions. Find out before you get into a fire fight if your gun will run in this position, then keep it in your "tool bag" in case you need it.

We did it regulary at the range when doing our rifle quals. We used beat to shit range mags and I never had a single malfuntion of any sort in 4 years.
No. Honestly, I find that it does not let me shoot as accurately as I can with a good tight unsupported prone position.
I have NEVER had it affect the reliability of an AR or m16, not once. |
Not sure about prone but I do it off the bench sometimes. Hasn't caused any problems with my AR, but I can see how people might get that impression, as the mag is a bit "loose" in there.
With a lever-style magazine lockup like an AK or FAL, I doubt it would cause any issues. |

FATS has recently upgraded the magazines for its training systems as to allow resting the mag on the ground. |

I do it all the time, just becase the Marines told me I shouldn't. No jams yet!

Travis told me not to. who the fuck is travis? No reason not to it wont cause a jam |

Whenever I shoot prone I do it.
No problems yet with USGI mags with Magpul followers. |
