Call it cynical or educated, but my guess is the first thing that comes to mind in Japanese scientists minds when they think of touchable holograms isn't a light switch.

If a real holodeck did exist.... First thing that comes to mind is one of the episodes of DS9, where the Chief and Dr Bashir suit up in RAF uniforms and battle it out in Dr Bashir's own program for the Battle of Britain. That would rock.

It took them awhile, but Japan has turned it around. They instituted govt testing of all exports. Have you ever heard of JCII, Japan Camera Inspection Institute. . That govt agency tests cameras for export, and they used to issue a sticker it passed.
