With the volcano going on it may be faster to take a boat.

Go to Kayak.com for ticket prices, and then have all of the "comparison" windows open up too. I got my tickets for Indonesia from Priceline going through Kayak. It's pretty great. :) But tickets as early as you can, the price only goes up. I waited 3 weeks and paid $300 more than I would have if I had just bought the tickets when I saw them. If you don't have it already, get your passport now. Long involved story as to why you shouldn't wait, but just do it now to save yourself headache and money.

Can't help you with Scotland specifically, so enjoy your trip and post pics! :)

ETA: I don't think he'll have to worry about Volcanic Ash from this one come August guys. Reading AND Comprehension if your friend.

Edinburgh, I spent a week there.  Then on to Glasgow, Ft. William, and Inverness at the bare minimum.  If you have the time/stamina hike the west highland way, you'll see Loch Lomond in the best possible way.  No matter where you go you'll have a great time, the people are very friendly and accommodating, the food is good, the booze is amazing.  I can't wait to go back again.

Bring spices and hot sauce.  They always forget to flavor their food.

Inverness, stay at local B&B's, see Loch Ness and take the boat ride to Urquhart Castle .  Make time to take the drive to the Isle of Skye and stop at Dunvegan Castle - Clan MacLeod, the drive is spectacular, and on the way you get to see Eilean Donan castle, from The Highlander movies...

We stayed here: Hotel Inverness - Craigdarroch Lodge Hotel  We were able to make day trips to all locations in the Highlands quite easily.  Some days were long, but easily doable.  Rogie Falls is just up the street too, and Inverness is a short drive away.

If your going to be in Edinburgh in August - a must see is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.  I wanted to smoke a Cuban cigar and sip a fine Scotch whiskey while I was there - but prices where pretty up there
