so is the volcanic ash just a convenient excuse not to go to the polish president's funeral or could he still have made the trip?

Ash in jet engines is not good.

Or he could just fly south into Poland.

This is obviously bullshit.

Seeing as Europe is shut down I think this one is legit.

If we had a President of Polish ancestry, he would make it there...

Nobody is flying even a Piper Cub in Europe. It's the lowest number of flights since 9.11.

Not going is a pretty reasonable decision to me given the current conditions over there.

This one is legit - Polish airspace is closed except for Krakow, and weather forecasts indicate the ash cloud will close that and other airports in souther Europe in the next few days if the ash volume continues as it is now.  He can probably get in, but there is a good chance he would be stuck there.  Not that I would miss him or anything...

Yeah getting the ash into the engines is bad juju for jets. Of all the things Obama fucks up, I think we can let this one slide.

Yeah, it's legit.  Very few are making the trip.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? Are flying conditions unsafe or are airlines canceling tens of thousands of flights just to give President Obama an excuse not to go? Tell me, which is more plausible.

Sure, I'll just fly in by way of Asia and take a train when we hit closed airspace.

I saw today where Norway's president had to fly from NY to Spain then drive to Norway.  Why risk you're life flying to a funeral as a political gesture?  I wouldn't.

The German Chancellor had to fly to Lisbon and also had to take a car back to Berlin. So I would venture to say as others that this is legit.

Unless Putin also cancels (nd maybe even if he does), it is crucial to our foreign policy for Obama to be there and show or strong support (I think he couldn't care much less, though) especially given the political campaign Russia has been conducting to try to woo Poland during their window of opportunity running up to the elections.  If it means he has to land in another country and get on a train or something, he should do it.

Just send Joe the Biden, that's his job anyways.

If they really wanted to have someone big at the funeral (IE: lying sack of shit or the Veep) they would have, as it is I'm sure the ambassador will be representing the USA....... He did appoint an ambassador to Poland right?

He could parachute out of the Space Shuttle: if anyone could do it, it would be the great one.  The  Russians could launch him into space and he could splash down in the Potomac.
