My favorite pocketknife is gone. It won't be coming back. I won't get into how I lost it but I'm a bit angry at myself.
It was just a fairly cheap Gerber with a stainless blade, but it was also my dad's last pocketknife, so the sentimental value factor was pretty high. So I want to replace it. And this time, I want to pick a GOOD knife. My requirements: 75 dollars cost, at most. Carbon steel blade. No stainless. No funky finishes on the blade. Not parkerized, not teflon, not blued, not any color, just plain old steel. Single hand operation, liner lock mechanism. After a little break-in period, should be as fast to open as a switchblade. 3.5" blade length, or close to it. Simple design. Nothing fancy. Quality brand name. USA made by preference. Good steel, must be able to handle daily use and probably some abuse as well. Fairly light weight. Must include a clip. So, make some recommendations. |

The Griptilian is stainless. Out of the running.
Also, no serrations or hooks or other stupid blade tricks. I hate those. Just a smooth edge full length. CJ |

I hate all of the stupid bullshit they put on knives that I will never use. Does anything from CRKT catch your eye? i love their M21/14 knives, but I'm not sure that they qualify with your list. |

CR large sebrenza, nothing fancy just a good pocket knife.
Edit...sorry didnt see your price point. |

Rat 1
I have 3 of them. Aus-8 steel. Grab one off eBay for around $25. Link to a buy it now. Edit: guess there made in Taiwan, sorry. |

Spyderco Delica. Except for the liner-lock, it fits. It's also a pretty handy EDC knife.
|
|
There are several Benchmades that would fit those criteria. Whatever you do, don't get a CRKT. Those things are shit and you'd be better off with a free knife you got with a can of cheap dip.

Your pricerange: Kershaw assisted opening, has "grip tape" in spots on handle, keeps a good edge. They made a huge run of them for Snap-On in red/black.
Good Knife: Benchmade with the options you like. |

Kershaw "Speed bump"
Its an assisted opener right about "4. Wife got it for me a year ago and now I dont leave home without it. A hair over your price cut but its worth it. Best pocket knife I have ever owned. |
|
SOG Trident. Should come pretty close to your requirements. I love mine after removing the BS safety.
|
|
Why liner lock? That is the worst folding knife locking system ever devised!
Why not frame lock or Axis Lock? Why not a spine lock? |
|

|
Lately I've abandoned all my high dollar knives for a SOG Flash II. Hell of a knife, and can be had for under $50.

When it comes to blades, I always go to Kershaw or Gerber. They have never let me down
|

Sadly Benchmade has discontinued the Red series. But some can still be found in stores.
I favor a Clip point of the seeming more popular Drop point or Tanto I have several Benchmade Pika (3.5") and mini-Pika's (2.5"). Plain simple and around $40. Don't know which product of there's I substitue with it now. Maybe the Spdyerco as others have recommended |
|
Quoted: Carbon steel blade. No stainless. All other requirements aside, I don't think that's going to happen. |

I guess it's stainless (440C) but the Mini Griptillian is in my opinion the best thing going.
No liner locks for me. |
|

Spyderco Delica or Native. Both great little knives for the money, and will not let you down.
|
|
I use a Kershaw tanto blade blur from Walmart.
Probably the only thing made in the USA at Walmart. $55 or $65 can't remember. |
|
Here are the Kershaw assisted opening ones I mentioned above. The 1550 or 1560 are cheap on this site: http://jaxknives.com/kershaw.html
|
|
Except for the non-coated blade, you described the Tanto Blur advertsied at the top of this page.
I would suggest you go to a Wal-Mart and feel one out and see what you think before you make a final decision. AWESOME knife. I LOVE mine. Sharp as hell and holds an edge well. Made in America and solid built with an smooth, easily operated open-assist. All for $57 + tax at any Wally World. Just my .02 |
|
If you don't want the griptillian, I'd go with a kershaw leek with the composite (D2) blade.
I have a junkyard dog 2 that's awesome, albeit a little large. It's sharp enough to shave part of a hair off of the rest. |

Emerson CQC-7
Do yourself a favor and look it up. I say it's the best no frills, all business folder out there. usually around $120. |

really like my g10 leek with s30v steel. That's one of my favorite Kershaw's |

My next folder will be either a Buck Sandman or CRKT M16-10KZ

Actually, I was thinking about starting to carry a knife since another GD thing got me thinking about it. So this thread pops up, I follow a couple of links, and then I'm $68.94 poorer. It's all good though! |
