If that's you in your avatar you'll look pretty cute on it. If it's not you in your avatar you're going to look gay.
Why not just buy a grom if you want to look like a weirdo who makes poor life choices?
Grown man would look silly riding one. Like a beatle riding a grasshopper.

It will be slow, but reliable. Also one of the coolest looking bikes produced today. Not much more to say. For a short commute it would be fun imo, but something like my 45 minute commute, no.
Maintenance should be minimal. |
damn fine documentary right there. damn fine.

I think they are really cool! Id buy one, but I dont think it would get any use. I have a dirt bike and 2 cruisers already. (oh and I live in the country)

Have a blue 2020. It's not fast and it's not "cool" but damn if it isn't a shitload of fun. It's real nimble and doesn't need much gas. 100mpg is a lie though, mine gets ~85ish. I'm 6'1 and 205 and mine will go 60 with no wind on a flat road. [edit] ETA the seat is really comfy. Way better than a Grom. You could do hours on it if you wanted. [/edit]

First I would say not for an only bike. But I would buy the new trail 125 (whatever it’s called) or the Honda super cub first.
I'd rather have a Grom and $900.
I'd also rather have a 1986 Suzuki Samurai. |
I think it looks fun as shit.
Most people will probably call it gay though. |
They're like fat girls, fun to ride, but you wouldn't want your friends to see you on one.
unless you're a manlet I'd recommend something larger. Even a CB300R would be a big step up from that on a commute.

Quoted: I have one and it's AWESOME !!! It's not about going fast, it's about enjoying the ride! I kinda like it.
Prolly look like an asshole riding it, but I'm old enough not to care.. |

Quoted: tell me about the monkey bike. thinking of using for my 3.5 mile commute to work. http://ridermagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Honda-Monkey-2.jpg View Quote If you aren't taking it off road, the Grom will probably serve you better and has a passenger seat. I've had a Grom for a number of years, it's a credible motorcycle that I enjoy a great deal for riding around my lake community. I would expect the Monkey to me much the same but maybe a little slower up top because of the tire tread-these bikes make only about 9hp so the acceleration from 45 to 55 isn't all that brisk. A Grom will do 62mph with a clean haircut and a lot of flat ground but is pretty much done accelerating at 55mph. Plenty of oomph to get you and a passenger around on 45mph roads. But I have to say, you can buy a hell of a lot of used bike for the kind of money you'd spend on a Monkey. These smaller bikes are a riot around town, but sooner or later your adventures start to get a little larger and they fall out of their element. Not too many people want to do a weekend trip on a Grom or Monkey. |
OP: If you like the Monkey, give a long hard look to the Suzuki VanVan 200. Really comfortable bike, looks cool, and is freeway legal.

looks like its for children
LOL @ the price eta- or an escape vehicle you keep in back of some 4x4 offroad junker |
Monkeys / Groms are for the "My wife doesnt want me to ride a dangerous motorcycle so i got a kids toy crowd"
problem is it is all of the risk without the guts to get out of the way. and you sit low so visibility will be crap. Dump the same 3k into a nicely used japanese 250 dual sport. ride it for a year and see what you like. |
They're awesome. Basically a Grom. Ultimate hooligan machine.
I had a Grom and while it was great fun, it's kind of a shitty bike. It has an oil spinner and oil screen instead of a real pickup pump, to clean the oil screen you have to crack the cases openSome of the components are on the cheaper side of "economy" and under the plastics some parts had a cheep vibe.
I have been following the Monkey bikes for a while and I have heard several reports that they are not holding up well even compared to the cheapish Grom. Lots of rust issues with some of the cheaper parts which is unfortunate because I wanted one. Guys also look at the new Trail cub 125, same motor but you even get a kick starter and spoked rims. |
OP.....
Spend a a little more money on a smaller dual-sport, like the Yamaha 230, the Kawasaki KLX 250, or the Honda 250 if you can swing it. Larger and more stable, more power, fuel injected, hiway legal, and better option for street/dirt trails....way more practical all the way around for what you are gonna do with it. And resale will be better if you do change your mind down the road. Monkey bike is nothing more than a glorified and expensive street-legal pit-bike. |

If you are adult sized I think you'd look like a monkey fucking a Tic Tac on that thing, but get what you want. Just don't take it to any bike nights

If I had a lot of free time, it would be neat to have one in the garage to dick around on.
If your commute isn’t crazy traffic, i vote give it a try and have a bit of fun. |

They are a blast. The mods list that you can do is crazy. If I didn’t have 7 bikes I’d buy one in a second. The guys in Europe make them more offroadish and do group camping tours all the time.
This is currently the most fun thing I own. Attached File |

Get a CRF250/300L,KLX250S,or best WR250R instead. A little dual sport doesn’t have the novelty value but they open up a world of dicking off and can vaguely keep up with most traffic.
The Monkey in yellow does look neat and will get more attention,if that matters. |
