I would not do it over. Started with a model 1 upper, upgraded to a custom upper by a respected member of the 6.8 community. Turned out to be a lot more money for no improved performance.
I use it deer season only. |

Fantastic round with all sorts of options and lots of stopping power. I've never had to track a deer more than 30 yards.

It's another caliber in the AR platform....
YOU NEED IT.... You start with an upper.... Then you add a lower to go with the upper.... Then, you get another new upper..... Then you need another lower.... And, around and around it goes.... Until you need another safe.... Then you need another upper..... And so on, and so on, and so on....

I love my Stag 7 and the extra power for game over a 5.56, it won't get shot enough for extra ammo cost to bother me.
But, I am going to sell my 6.8 carbine upper and buy another 5.56, I shoot carbines too much to fully field a 6.8. Said Model 7

They do make a good deer rifle. You also have a decent selection of bullets if you reload.

I have a couple 6.8 rifles, both AR pattern, a 16" TC Encore barrel, and a Remington 700 out of their custom shop. I love all of them. 6.8 is probably my favorite hunting round. It has super low recoil for introducing new hunters to the flock. I have killed a bunch of deer over the years with everything from SSA's 120gr ProHunter bullet (worked very well, never lost a deer), the SSA 85g TSX (freaking love this bullet in my 18" 700, it has proven to be excellent on deer and does well behind my SWR can), I have hand loaded the 110g Accubond and liked them for deer. I bought a bunch of the Federal XM68GD and it runs great in my 11" SBR, easy 300y hits with a 4x ACOG. It does the job with deer, but I still like the TSX the best.
I also dabble in the subsonic blackout game for deer but my go to supersonic is the 6.8 I say go for it. |

Awesome round for shorter barrels. I have a 7.5in 6.8 that should still give reliable expansion/penetration out to 200 yards or more.
That 7.5 inch 6.8 has the same energy at the muzzle (~1200ft/lbs) as a 16 inch 5.56 shooting m193. I know it's not good to get wrapped up with numbers such as ft/lbs of force but it is definitely something to consider if you are wanting to go shorter. I also have a 16 inch 6.8 that I use for more of an recce type rifle. Very accurate and smooth. The nice thing about 6.8 is all it takes is a barrel and bolt change to go back to 5.56 if you want. Ammo prices aren't that bad considering all of the ammo is equivalent to premium hunting/match grade ammo. If I were you I would just buy a barrel/bolt and a mag and try it out. There is something very satisfying about shooting steel targets and hearing a meatier SMACK when going from 5.56 to 6.8. |

i have 2 556 ars and 1 in blackout. i reload for both but know just about nothing about the 6.8. does it use a 556 bolt and can you make the brass out of 556 like i do with blackout? does it uses standard mags as well?

I've been using one since its was hard to get brass much less factory ammo.
I've used it on Deer and have yet to have one do more than take a step or two before they fall over. Coyotes out to 300 yards and they just drop. If you plan on using it to hunt with I'd say go for it. It has been a very reliable hunting round for me and I get excellent accuracy out of my hand loads. YMMV |

I have a LWRC SIX8 SPR 16.1...which makes me totally committed to the round. I think the round is worth the addition to anyone's collection...especially if you have a SBR lower. An upper and a mag makes for a very versatile hog/deer gun with pretty awesome results. I vote yes...

All of you wanting in on the 6.8 caliber, but dislike the different bolt, mags, expensive brass, etc. on the 6.8 spc need to find out what the .277 Wolverine can do.
Uses everything that your 5.56 guns do, except the barrel obviously. If you reload, you can get nearly the same velocity as the 6.8, but factory ammo is available as well. I have one in an 18" barrel and it is all I used for hunting this past year. From what I understand, it offers a lot for those wanting pistol barrels and there is the potential to load it subsonic for suppressed. Look it up under the AR Forum. I had a buddy that is on the swat team of our local PD shoot 2 of my 6.8s a 18 hunter model and 14.5 pin and he was in love, he said that he felt his team would be outgunned by going up against the 6.8

OP, since you reload & have .277projos layin around you should research the .277Wolverine Requires only a barrel swap. Terminal performance is only a few ticks behind 6.8SPCII. Works very well in the 85-110grn ranges out to 200yrds. Even a case I know of has taken a deer at 300yds with 90GD's. More energy than 300Whisper/BLK.

Had a 6.8 for a while, bought it for hogs in GA. Even then 5.56 probably would have been fine but 6.8 seemed cool. I moved back to OH, had no real use for it in OH and sold it. 556 handles everything I need it to (Coyotes, HD) and I can't use 6.8 on deer here. If I could, I might have kept it, but even then 556 is fine for deer if you pick your shots.

I have a 6.8 for hogs. It's perfect for game that size, powerful enough to drop them, but not overpowered as to take half the backside with it on exit, or at least that's what I tell myself.
I've shot hogs with 223 plenty of times, but I like the one shot DRT the 6.8 gives. |

I'm building a 6.8 right now. I'm on the last step now trying to figure out what to put on top of it. I bought the Bison Armory 18" and bolt off the EE.
What scope are you guys using? I'm thinking 3-10ish but definitely 30mm. |

Mags and rounds are dropping fast in price. My complete ARP upper is by far my most accurate AR. I don't think they are still making full uppers but would buy their barrels.

For all you guys who are deer hunting, are you shooting heart/lungs, shoulder or neck shots? I have shot 3 deer this year with my RRA 6.8 and only recovered one, NONE have left a blood trail. I have been shooting heart/ lung shots, first with Hornady SST, and Federal Fusions.

The Accubond seems to so far. My closest shot with 6.8 has been 30 meters, farthest around 140 meters. The shots that didn't exit penetrate around 20". The internal damage is impressive. Only one has required a second shot, and that was the one at 30m. It's perfect for whitetail in most the country. If you are after deer over 200 lbs, keep your shots broadside if you want an easy to track exit. |

I have 3-6.8's my family and hunters use them all the time for hunting. It is a dang good caliber in my opinion. My daughter took a wildebeest with one a few years ago so I know it is capable of taking down larger than whitetail game.

I love my 6.8 SPC. I've got an ARP barrel and the ARP super bolt.
I've been shooting it more than my 5.56 gun. There are loads of bullets to choose from for reloading. 2 dead deer so far. |
