I wouldn't recommend giving to the United Way, if only because of their policy on the Boy Scouts, plus the fact that they have to use a percentage of what you donate for their own overhead and administrative purposes.

Do you have a local volunteer fire/rescue squad?  They generally work on lean budgets, so I'm pretty generous when giving to mine.

My search and rescue team operates on a very tight budget, and it is a charity.  We help local law enforcement agencies find lots campers, hikers, hunters, kids, alzheimer's patients, etc.

The Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners Foundation, and Friends of NRA are all 501(c)3 charitable pro-RKBA groups.  While by law they can't lobby, they spend their money on fighting anti-gun lawsuits and educating the public about firearms ownership.

Your local Boy Scout Council is an excellent
place for your money and any spare time you have.

St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, if you can't pay you don't have to.

Find a local group such as a search and rescue group or such. Otherwise you`re just supporting aspiring socialists. I`m able to write off a fair amount of labor, time and travel, as well as parts and material contributions.
