My completely uninformed opinion is that folks in Japan saw how the market exploded for Suntory, and wanted to get in on that. So a lot of smaller distilleries found ways to import to the US to get on the gravy train. |

I dipped my toes with a bottle of Monsho Pure Malt Whisky. "Pure Malt" means it's a blended spirit.
It's very good, if a little astringent at first. I let it sit in the glass a bit, and the astringency faded away, replaced with a fairly complex and smooth flavor profile. Not bad for $50. I'd like to try more of the Japanese whiskys, but I'm not paying $250 for anything. |

So far, I’ve tried Hakushu 12 and Nikka Coffey Malt. As soon as things open a little, I’m planning a weekend trip to the Nikka Distillery in Sendai. I know the distilleries still sell the aged stuff from time to time.

Not a whole lot happening on the nose or palate right away. But it lingers for a long time and unfolds with some very nice licorice, toffee, smokey flavors. It's definitely in the 'overpriced Japanese whisky' category, but I'm glad to have it in my cabinet. It's a young whisky, for sure. But comparing it to another young whiskey like Iron Root Harbinger is like comparing sushi to smoked mullet. Both are satisfying, but not very alike. |

I fent.
Meiyo 15 year bushido series Very "mild", 80 proof, I guess I'm used to higher proofs now. Not bad, though, a bit of wood and fruit. Not the flavor bomb I was expecting from a 15, though the Japanese whiskey I've had so far tend to be subdued.  |
