Kamaki is pretty good juice. Otherwise you have made some solid choices in that like up. That Kaiyo tho... let me know what you think, I suppose!

My completely uninformed opinion is that folks in Japan saw how the market exploded for Suntory, and wanted to get in on that. So a lot of smaller distilleries found ways to import to the US to get on the gravy train.

Are any of these Japanese juices worth the squeeze?

I dipped my toes with a bottle of Monsho Pure Malt Whisky.  "Pure Malt" means it's a blended spirit.

It's very good, if a little astringent at first.  I let it sit in the glass a bit, and the astringency faded away, replaced with a fairly complex and smooth flavor profile.

Not bad for $50.

I'd like to try more of the Japanese whiskys, but I'm not paying $250 for anything.

Point of reference...

Coffey is named for the Coffey still used for distillation.
In 1830, Irishman, Aeneas Coffey, patented the two-column, continuous distillation apparatus which bears his name, versions of which are now ubiquitous across the distilling industries. The still allowed for the production of alcoholic spirit with an ethanol content of greater than 90%, though modern versions can achieve about 95%.

Like the big guy said: "John Coffey, ma'am.  Like the drink, only not spelt the same."

So far, I’ve tried Hakushu 12 and Nikka Coffey Malt. As soon as things open a little, I’m planning a weekend trip to the Nikka Distillery in Sendai. I know the distilleries still sell the aged stuff from time to time.

I bought a bottle the other day.  Like so many things Japanese, it starts out very understated.  Not a whole lot happening on the nose or palate right away.  But it lingers for a long time and unfolds with some very nice licorice, toffee, smokey flavors.

It's definitely in the 'overpriced Japanese whisky' category, but I'm glad to have it in my cabinet.  It's a young whisky, for sure.  But comparing it to another young whiskey like Iron Root Harbinger is like comparing sushi to smoked mullet.  Both are satisfying, but not very alike.
