I was watching Apocalypse Now on Bluray and wondered what the diagonal wires on the tail boom are. Antenna? |

I noticed them on the ones in the movie but hardly see them anywhere else.
I kinda thought the little wing looking thing above the cockpit was the UHF/VHF antenna not the forward facing cable cutting thing |

Yes, the antenna on top of the cabin is most likely UHF. The wire down the tailboom is the HF antenna.

yep nailed it HF comm antenna. Kind of useless on a helo. HF is used for long range comm (over the water). UHF and VHF are better for theater ops.

Interesting. I have found HF on my helo quite useful. HF-ALE is even better.
