Nothing at lowes or home depot seems to work, nor does 24d.  What kills this stuff?  It's got the milky stuff when you break a stem.  [/img]

You can use a kilz all but it will kill the grass you spray as well. Just pull it out if its a small spot

All over the lawn or just spotty? I'd use Spectracide and mist it, you will kill some grass, but it will grow back.

If it's green, I don't kill it. Without that stuff, I'd have no lawn.

It's all over the lawn.  its like half the lawn i'm just watering weeds.  would pre emergent in fall/spring do anything if I wanted to fight it slowly?

Well I had it in my yard, finally looked it up and it's pigweed. I know the "kills the weed not the grass" sprays will work, but they take weeks. The only other thing I read was to dig it up, this will not be an option as you have so much. Like I said before if you set the Spectracide to a mist and spot treat you will mostly kill the weed.

That stuff loves to grow in my driveway.  Touchdown kills it in a few days.  Be careful it will kill grass though.

Have you tried trimec?

It's a 2-4D based spray but blended with other herbicides to nab those resistant weeds. It's like a one-two punch, except it's really a one-two-three punch...

It's not a be-all, end-all herbicide but it's a LOT better than what Lowe's etc carry. You can't get real chemicals in Lowe's etc because they are marketed toward homeowners that don't have a clue what they are doing, nor do they have a desire to find out what they are doing before applying chemicals. Chemical label? What's that? Is that for the sissy men that don't know how to use chemicals? No, it's for EVERYBODY that applies chemicals. Alas, the home-improvement stores have decided that it's just easier to carry the more "stupid-proofed" chemicals.

Places I have found that DO carry real chemicals: farm stores (Tractor Supply Co., Rural King, Orchelans, etc). If you can't find what you need there go to a co-op type ag supplier. They may not stock turf-grass sprays but they can most certainly get them because they have accounts with the chemical suppliers.

I had to go to a co-op last year when I needed some Drive XLR8 to get the crab-grass infestation caused by a bad batch of crab-grass preventer... I took a jar of Vaseline with me: 1/2 gallon = $70

that is prostrate pigweed.

spray a combination selective herbicide containing 2,4D and Dicamba.  Gordon's Q4Plus is a good approach.  apply, wait 7-10 days, apply again on stragglers.  note: ANY selective herbicide can damage turfgrass when the turfgrass is under drought or other stress (fungal, etc).  application of Q4Plus should only be made below 85'F and only if the turfgrass is healthy.

netsedge is effectively and cheaply controlled by Sedgehammer.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005BYOIEE/

note: Sedgehammer comes in a dry packet and is mixed with water before application.  the mixed solution *must* be used up within 1-2 days, otherwise it will become inert and ineffective.  so mix it and spray it, all at once.

Too bad DuPont took their 'Imprelis'  off the market a few years ago.  That stuff worked pretty well on pigweed.

good riddance to Imprelis -- it killed MANY TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TREES in the process of killing turfgrass weeds.

That looks like black medic. It's tough to kill late in the season, the best cure is to use Tri-mec (2-4D will not get it done) as soon as they appear. Granulars are not as effective on this, spray is the way to go.

We're in the same boat.
I hate when winter hits and all of the weeds die, because my "lawn" looks really bad.

Nevermind, 2-4d is the answer.  Pigweed is likely resistant to roundup.

Dual Magnum, Frontier, Harness, Callisto, Laudis, Impact, Status, 2,4-D, simazine will also likely work.

Looks like some sort of Spurge, I use a mix of 2,4-D and Roundup (It's good to be the son of a farmer!).

My guess would be spurge. Pigweed is a succulant, also known well as Purslane.. I happen to have both in my lawn. I had it looking great this summer till a long dry spell in june. The grass recovered but not before the  spurge and pigweed took root.

I find if sprayed early, it keeps it at bay. Once it takes good root and has a chance to flourish, forget it, try again next summer.
My lawn guy uses Eliminate. Great on all this stuff IF like arjedi said is used below 85 degrees when the lawn is not under any stress. I sprayed a month ago at around 80, and i regret it now. I have spots where the weeds died, but took grass with it kinda. Now the patches of bare lawn are becoming host to the same crap i killed initially. It's a loosing battle. I'll try again next summer.
Without irrigation, its very difficult to keep my lawn nice. Worst part is, i only have at most 3" of topsoil over hard shale so it makes it impossible to retain moisture for long, and irrigation isn't an option due to impossible digging.

SIGH.

Edited for spelling and to add, A mature purslane plant can make thousands of seeds over the course of a summer, and the seeds remain dormant and potentially active for up to 30 years in the soil. Aye aye aye!

You got's the Spurge!  The way I would remedy is:

1.  Mow as low as possible, scalp it and bag.

2.  Spray with Glycophosphate, at a heavy rate 3 oz/gal.

3.  Wait a week and do a soil test, apply nutrients as needed.

4.  Overseed at 8 lbs/acre with a slit seeder.

5.  Water religiously for the next 7-10 days to aid in germination.
