Title says it. I have been through every button and menu on the TV remote. No luck. Could this be done there or should I be looking at the stereo receiver or cable box?

The closed captioning is going to be dependent on your video source as opposed to the display device. Could also be hardcoded subs that you wouldnt be able to turn off anyway.
