Wife and I bought a new car and as things go in a marriage, she'll be the one driving it. My old car, a 1995 Nissan Maxima SE with 210k miles, is toward the end of her life so I inherited the wife’s Civic.

Compared to the Maxima, the Civic’s performance is anemic at best.

I’m avid DIY, but not able or willing to rewire the ECU, drop in a new motor or install a turbocharger. Warranty is up, so I’m not concerned about upgrades that would void that. I looked over the net for upgrades, but there’s so much stuff out there it’s difficult to sort through the BS crap and things that will work.

Some details:
-2000 Honda Civic EX 2 door coupe.
-100k miles.
-Automatic transmission
-Drive 90 miles day, 90% highway.

Other than buying another car, what upgrades can I make to get the best bang for the buck?  I’m looking to increase the horsepower, even 10-20% would be helpful.

I have an 01 ex.  It's got 93K on it and I keep it bone stock.  I had a 98 prelude before that and did the bolt ons that included, intake, exhaust, header, pulleys.  I probably spent 2 grand on that crap and got maybe 10-12 wheel hp.  Needless to say I wish I had that 2 grand in cash right now.

Anything you do to your civic, whether it's intake or exhaust is going to make your car a little fart sounding drone and attract unwanted attention.  Not to mention how annoying that's gonna be on the highway.  My brother, who bought my prelude finally took the exhaust off cause it was driving him nuts.  I'll never do that crap to a car again.

I would suggest if you want performance, to leave the Civic alone and pick up a bike.  You could get something like a Ninja 500 or SV650 for the same price as you would spend for bolt ons for your car and have bike that's capable of 4 second 0-60 times and 12-13 second quarter miles.  You'd spend 30 grand on your civic before you could get that kinda performance.

Ok I'm actually frightned by those people.

as for performance mods on a honda you're pissing money if you think you're gonna see any real performance increases.

You may not welcome this opinion, but if you want to go fast, why are you starting with an econobox?

I'd welcome the opinion if it was based on the original message....

Not starting out with the Civic-wife got the new car, I got her (old) Civic.

He is not choosing to buy a civic to make it a speed machine, he is trying to maximize his situation.

ETA: beat me to it ;)

I think it's proven that most 'WeaponR' and 'Greddy' stickers add at LEAST 10HP.

You can probably get your headers, cold air intake and exhaust for under $1500.

Honestly, other than putting good tires on it and a new air filter I really can't think of anything that would be worth bothering with.  It's a honda civic.

Please don't use the word civic and performance in the same sentance.

Thank you.
