I know GM trucks up and down, but know little about cars.

What's so damn great about the Camaro?  From a quick search, it appears it has an aluminum block.  That's it?

A 502 would be cooler.

An aluminum block thats it? Are you friggin kidding me. If that is indeed a real Zl1 Camaro is is one of the rarest and most badassed cars ever build. It will sell for well over a million dollars. Very surprised it wasn't at Barrett Jackson.

ZL1 would be the baddest engine put in to a street car until the ZR-1 Corvettes.

560 hp, off the top of my head.

Basically cars built for racing, sold with license plate holders. Very rare

The ZR1 Vette was nothing special. The current Z06 LS6 engine puts down more power than the ZR1. There was nothing special about that engine other than it being DOHC and all aluminum. IMO the ZL1 and L88 were pretty equal in their badassedness. Actually I believe the L88 is the one that made 560hp. So far nothing has come close until the new LS7 comes out. Now that will be an awesome engine.

The ZL1 was an option in 1969 only. IIRC only 69 were built with that option.
Aluminum block,heads & intake. Had between 450-500hp.
Met a guy in 91 or 92 that put a ZL1 in his '33 coupe. He said the engine cost him 20K!

1969 was a brief window in time where model proliferation, engine options, and bulls-eye styling converged to create some incredible Camaro combinations. By far, the most exotic was the ZL1 Camaro. Sixty-nine were built and each came with two things that would guarantee its place in legend and lore: a 430hp all-aluminum 427 (a staggering $4,160 option) developed for Can Am racing, and a price tag over $7,000 (a basic V-8 Camaro was less than $3,000).

on a side note, heres somthing i found interesting.

Only 69 of them ever built.

41 Left known to exist

Of the 41:

22 known to be unrepairable/destroyed
6 left "undiscovered"
7 left with original aluminum motor
6 dusk blue 4 speed cars built.

The LT1 Vettes were making 300 hp at the time and were about .4 seconds slower in the 1/4 and to 60 than the ZR1. You could surely put a whole lot less than $28,000 in an LT1 and easily outperform the ZR1. It was a novel and exotic idea for GM to build a DOHC small block (actually it was designed by Lotus and built by Mercury Marine) but it was really nothing special for damn near $70,000. That motor sure did sound nice though

Exactly.

The 13.12 @ 110.2 timeslip quoted above isn't exactly earth-shattering either.  430 GROSS horsepower is pretty good but not breathtaking.  I wonder what it could pull with modern rubber under it?  Maybe mid-12.7s?  That's close to '02-'04 Z06 territory.  A slightly ($2k worth) modded '03-'04 Cobra or the C6 Z06 would easily beat it.

The ZL1's greatest attribute seems to be its rarity.

Oh, and the C6 Z06's "427" (actually rounds to 428 but, hey, you can't call a Chevy engine a 428) is a SMALL BLOCK making 505 SAE net HP.  Put that in your '60s pipe and smoke it.

Don't get me wrong, I think first-gen Camaros are one of the best-looking cars ever but the ZL1 doesn't even have THAT going for it.

It ran 13.4's on pretty good modern tires and made 375 hp to the crank for around $70,000. I was saying it was nothing special. The ZL1 on the other hand indeed is. It may have run a 13.1 at 110 on crap bias ply tires but I would wager to say a good set of modern slicks and no other mods whatsoever would have it in or the 11's easily.

Yeah, the deal is that the Camaro of those years was a fairly light car.
Putting a steel big block in there killed the handling of the car, ok for a drag car.
Putting a small block meant the car could turn, but had more traction than power.

Putting a ZL1, L88, which weighed the same as a 327 meant it handled like a small block car, and accelerated like a big block.

the base engine 327/350 was rated at 300 h.p.  good enough for 0-60 in about 6.5 sec. base engine was not a slouch.

Darn you beat me to it.

Also when people have mentioned that the ZL1 is under rated they are not kidding. I have read that it was under rated to the tune of about 100HP, and that when you ditch the stock manifolds the HP jumped up into the neighborhood of 550-600HP. Some of the articles I have read stated that this car was not very streetable at all. Horrible idle, milage, ran VERY hot in any kind of traffic etc.

It will go for over 1Mill for sure.
