Hatch rot and water leaks are common.  Rear axle bearings are shit (both my friend's and my dad's Cherokees broke their rear ends with no abuse).  They burn through front U-joints and the steering boxes tend to leak.

jp magazines had a list of cherokees to look for certain things.  

their recommendation was the later years

the 97 has three different electrical harnesses modifications and had issues

anything older than 98 through 01

I have a 93 and an 00. I personally like the older one more. Make sure you get one with the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle rather than the Dana 35. I6 is the only way to go.

Be prepared for crappy gas mileage though.
