Sirs it is almost renewal time!!!

I need to protect 3 machines on a wireless network from all the regular stuff the wife and kids might bounce into.

Must be easy to use, purchase and "automatic" as far as updates etc

I have McAfee now and it doesn't hold me back(not an expert)

You will likely get all kinds of recommendations. I am of the opinion if you've been using McAfee and never had any problems, I would stick with what works. Renew the subsciption for another year or so. Much easier then uninstalling what you have and then installing something new and then trying to figure out how it works

I switched my home computers and all my work machines on the network to Nod32 about 2 years ago and never looked back.

best virus protection is not clicking on every damn link someone sends you.

aside from that, I've been using Forefront. Pretty good.

I ditched McAfee years ago. I've been using AVAST (free) and Zonelabs (annual subscribe) with no problems. That may have something to do with the fact that no wife/kids use my computer.

My broker offered free McAfee recently. I declined. I think my 450 mhz clunker runs "faster" with the Avast.

There are still elements of McAfee I run across from time to time. Something like "Registry Fix" will root out most of them after you "uninstall".

There's a paid version of AVAST, don't know if it's a one time shot or annual subscription or the advantages over the free version.

I use the lowely free version of Grisoft AVG 8.0. and I run a Unix firewall here on my local network.

I have been running this combunation for a few years now with no problems, and best of all it doesnt cost a thing!

McAfee is a huge pig. I dumped it for AVG 8, but AVG turned out to be huge as well. I've since switched to Avast, and it works just peachy.

The latest version of Avast (4.8) includes built in spyware and rootkit protection. I've been using it for a couple years now and it works very well. Its free too.

AVG freeware and Zone alarm freeware here myself,

Been slammed to the point of having to reformat a few hard drives with the best of payware more than a few time in the past, and can't see paying for it anymore unless some one is going to pay me money for my time when the solfware does fail to stop my system from becoming infected in the first place.

Simply backing up is a given, since not, but when you have to nuke the drive(reformat) to kill everything to reload it all when the time comes.

I bought the 5 license deal from AVG after using them for free for years. I have yet to be infected by something that AVG did not intercept.

I just installed Avast on the in-law's PC. They'd gotten a trojan that took me a while to get rid of. Even after Spybot said it was gone and by all appearances it was, Avast found it in a couple of system restore points. Ran the scan again last night and Spybot came out clean but Avast found one more. Gonna run it a few more times until it comes up clean as well. Seems to be working well so far. We'll see what happens when I put it back online.

+1 I did exactly the same. Best antivirus program I've ever used. It does everything that I want it to do and nothing that I don't.

"Norton" products blow. It is a known fact. "Symantec" stuff on the other hand is pretty decent.
