Just installed a 100gb 7200rpm seagate drive into my 3 year old compaq.

My notebook feels like a desktop now. Even with only a AMD 1600 (which I am upgrading to a 2500 as soon as it gets here). It runs so much faster.

I just wish I could upgrade my video card.

that type of drive pretty much comes with any new LOW end system that you buy.   Less money = less performance.

Low end? Most of the notebooks I work on and seen only have 4600 and maybe 5400rpm drives. 4600 are dog slow(which is what I had). I've only seen high end systems with 7200rpm drives.

i ment to say that they saved money by putting the lower rpm harddrives in those systems.

Lap tops often come with just a 4200 rpm drive , some do come with 5400, and the  high end come with the 7200.  The slower drives do have the advantage of using less power, but since mine is more a desk top replacement anyway, I don't care.  I wasn't able to get a 7200 for mine, but I picked up a 5400 a couple weeks ago and put that in my Gateway, and am using the original one as an external drive.

For LAPTOPS, (2.5" drives) most come with 5400 RPM's. 4200 is considered junk now.
It's desktops that "normally" have 7400's.

There's at least two 7400-RPM laptops out there now, about 2.5X as expensive as normal, 60gb for $200 is one I saw.

They've been available for a few months maybe, not that long. But all the few people I've heard/read of putting them in, they ALL said it's a fantastic difference.

I had a kid in the Apple store tell my boss that booting from a 7200rpm external firewire 400 device would be faster than booting from the onboard 5400rpm hard drive.  Smells like BS to me.

Well it actually would depend on the bus speed of the laptop. It might be ATA66 or ATA100... in which case the firewire 400 might actually be faster.. in theory.

7200 in a laptop kicks ass.   Before I went and bought my own laptop I was using an old 1gig dell laptop but with a 7200rpm drive it wasnt that painfull.     I also made sure my new one had a 7200rpm drive as well.
