Hi.  Just PCS'd to tech school, going to be here for quite a while.  About to phase up and be allowed electronics.

I need a monitor.
I want an LCD.

Is there any reason not to get a Dell 19" or so?
Anyone offer same/better quality for about the same price?  ($320 right now)
Any tremendous flaws?

Thanks.

-Ben

I have a pretty nice NEC 17" LCD I am planning on getting rif of, if you are interested.  I dont have it listed or anything, but I would take $150, or would trade for a new complete AR bolt carrier group and charging handle.

That said, Dell makes some pretty good monitors, but personally, I have a problem with anything dell branded on my home build.  I would go viewsonic.

Dell just released a 30" UltraSharp display…

It supposedly looks as good as the Apple and… it is cheaper.

Thanks.

CRT was a no go - space considerations, among other things.

Got the monitor.  Any suggestions on a  $100 and under video card?  Watch a few DVD's and play a quick game of CS once in a while, nothing too serious.

AGP or PCI-Express?

Motherboard can accept either.  I haven't paid any attention to computers for the last 2-3 years; have no preference.

PCI-express is not the same as standard PCI.

PCI-express has not been out 3 years if the computer is that old you need APG.

GeForce 6600GT is good bang for the buck and can be had for about $130 or you if you have to keep it under $100 you can get the GeForce 6600

Okay.  Built my current desktop 2 or 3 years ago, shaky on the time framer.  Apologies.
I do recall the mobo had 8x AGP and PCI-E.

Thanks.

As far as I know, there is only one motherboard with both - an ECS.  And it isnt nearly that old.  You are probably thinking of PCI, which isnt even close to PCI-Express.

It's very short on bling, but I have a Dell E193FP 19" LCD monitor that I bought as a refurb from Dell for about $260. I love the damn thing, especially at that price.  Works like a charm and everything I do, including kids games, look just fine. YMMV.

My wife is very sensitive to monitor quality, and has shied away from LCDs for a long time.  I convinced her to try an Ultrasharp with her new Dell, and she's extremely happy with it.  (Dell 19" Ultrasharp, using DVI).
