He has the best rowing videos out there.  I've probably watched a dozen or more and I always learn something useful.

What pace (500 average) are you guys typically rowing at for shorter and longer distances?
Link Posted: 1/15/2019 11:34:06 AM EDT

1/15: 15000/134000

Since I go for distance to try to build up my muscle endurance, I am aiming for 2:00-2:10 per 500m pace. I am going to be incorporating some sprint interval work soon as well. Based on my long distance pace, I imagine a full out 20-30sec sprint would be between 1:40-1:50, maybe faster, not sure.

My C2 logbook will show 2:20-2:30 paces for my rows because I jump off at various intervals and do strength exercises like push ups, sit ups, squats, etc, and then get back on for the next interval.

I can sustain 2:13/500m for 20-30 minutes. When I do 30sec hard/30sec easy intervals I’m getting down below 2:00/500 but by 10 minutes it’s all I can do to keep it below 2:00/500m for 30 seconds.

2:00-2:10 for sustained

For sprints I will typically do 500m intervals and set a 1:55 cap for myself. Maybe 3 or 4 sets depending on any other work performed in between or during the day. Other times I might just go for max 1 minute sprint for meters

So does anyone want to recommend some underwear that will keep me from, um, “rolling my stones” while rowing? Nothing painful is happening but there’s definitely some movement that is disconcerting.

I don't know if you can completely stop the movement of your balls, just because your thighs are so close together. You can minimize the rolling. I find the Tesla compression underwear from Amazon does well, as does the Baleaf compression underwear.

Tesla is showing not available with that link, but they might be somewhere under a different name.

  • Long leg cut brings support and a stay-put fit
  • Smooth seam prevents chafing

just got the rower 2 days ago and jumped right in...thou not the #s id like. Did 5000 m yest and today for my first rows.
5000m about 2:17 pace-I cant believe some of the #s the erg community puts up.

I knocked 12 seconds off on my 2nd try.  This rower kicks my ass.  When Im done,  I collapse.  But its a great machine and the data and log book are outstanding.

Im 53 and in fair shape and can ski 14,000 foot mtns -heading to the alps again in 2 weeks.

I joined the arfcom erg club.

Good work. Rowing has definitely been an eye-opener for me was well. All I did before was run, which is fine, but I felt like I was neglecting other muscle groups. Rowing engages so many more muscles, you feel spent. Keep at it, your body will adapt. And don't worry about what you see on the C2 Logbook site. I would bet some of those are athletes from other countries for sports like skiing, rowing and non-mainstream sports.

The Concept2 website has been a fantastic resource for me getting started rowing. The first workouts were really helpful in establishing what pace and rate I could maintain over the course of a given workout.

Concept2 First Workouts

I’ve also been using the workout of the day quite a bit to keep myself from just hopping on and doing an easy 5000 meters and calling it good. I’m discovering that you can really get a lot of work in on it.

Okay, I'm in.

I'm dealing with some issues, so am going to act my age (60) and take an easy and sane start.

Didn't want to post till I thought I'd be okay with it, in fact.  In the last week, I had 3 easy, easy rows of 2k meters at a 3:00 pace, and everything felt nominal. Focus on technique, and on seeing if a knee would blow up.  It did not.

So, as of yesterday, 2000/6000m.  I'm rowing on a Concept 2 Model B with upgraded ergonomics (handle and flexfoot) and electronics.

I took a couple of weeks off due to feeling really beat up.  I've gained quite a bit of weight since I started rowing due to a ravenous appetite and I think overall, I was just pushing too hard for my current condition.  Now that I've rested up, I'm going to start back really easy and do far fewer days per week for now.

For those of you on the C2 Logbook, their February challenge is coming up. Row 14k meters between 2/9 & 2/14. Not too hard but it's a small window.
